Gardening, Canning, etc.....

Sunday morning early - about 6:00 a.m. last weekend....  It was beautiful.... I was outside with my camera before breakfast, before getting ready for church...

What's been going on on the farm this week?  Well, the garden is progressing and moving forward quickly.  I think EVERYTHING is going to be ready to pick and put up, freeze or can THIS week.  Good grief - poor planning on my part?  I don't know, but it's always this way it seems.  We have tons of tomatoes this year as opposed to last year.  We've had  a few good rains and no blossom end rot to deal with - just hornworms, but the chickens got to eat all of those!  Salsa is going to be a MUST this summer!

I've been saving up cucumbers and put a dozen of Mamaw's spicy sweet dills, I guess you'd call 'em. They are THE BEST pickles I've ever eaten!  That's about all we make.  Tony doesn't want anything else.  I probably will do some relish with some of the too-big cucumbers.  I imagine we'll put up at least 5-6 dozen quarts of pickles for the family and close friends.  Thanks, Mamaw, for teaching me to can and for leaving me this recipe!!  My sister is coming Friday and we are going to can pickles and plum jelly all day.

This past Friday, my dear sweet young friend, K, came over and spent the day with me.  We always do jelly together and this year was no exception.  She went home with 2 dozen 1/2-pint jars of beautiful plum jelly.  I think she REALLY enjoyed it  and we just had a great time, had lunch and then she wanted to sit out in the backyard with our lime-ade and watch the chickens!  I think we covered just about every subject under the sun!  AND solved several world problems, too!

Tony and I worked outside in the garden most of today.  We picked four quarts of pintos, seen here in the freezer. I think the rest of the plants I'm going to leave until they dry up so I can store the pintos in the pantry instead of taking up room in the freezer.  Don't you think?

We picked a second batch of green beans and they wound up filling three quart bags for the freezer after I blanched them.  We LOVE green beans.  I found some from Ferry*Morse that do really good, and claim to be stringless.  I've used them about 3 years in a row.  Of course, if you leave them on the bush too long, they'll get tough, but so far, we've been able to pick them at the right time...

  A mild winter, more rain and an earlier planting season has put us a bit ahead this year.  Kinda nice.  I'm liking my raised bed garden boxes.  They've done well, I've got watermelons in one, tomatoes in another, purple hulls peas and more green beans.  I put my onions in one, too, but I think they prefer the sandy hot soil that they're used to around here.

Hey, what's going on at your place?  How's your garden growing?

Hay cutting season, too... Another foggy morning that I was out early.  You know, I always heard older people can't or don't sleep later.  I wake up at daybreak - 'round here it's beginning to get light around 5:30. I'm usually up and at'em by 6.  It's so nice outside early so I usually head outside with Bug, and we let the chickens out, I check the garden, water a few flowers, and let Bug get her business done.  Sometimes, I carry my camera with me.  Gypsy meets up with us - she's usually covered with burrs in her fur OR she's soaking wet after taking a dip in the pond.  We stroll around the yard and the garden and I mentally make a note of what needs to be done.

Couple more shots for you and I guess I'll close.  Tomorrow's Sunday and we'll be worshiping with the saints at our church.  I hope you all have a wonderful Lord's day and let's all remember to keep it holy and reverent...and ALWAYS be thankful!  May He bless you richly with His grace!

"Snapshots of Jesus" - John 8

On Sunday morning this fall, our preacher at our church is doing a series of lessons on the Life of Jesus and he's entitled it "Snapshots of Jesus".  He decided that he wanted a visual aid OR an illustration from one of the Bible stories about our Savior.  I was asked to illustrate  John 8 - about the woman caught in adultery.  You'll have to do the best you can to view these pictures - my project was sitting out on the front porch where I'd been spraying a sealer on it. Kind of a glare on the photos.

I painted this scene on a 4'x8' sheet of plywood.  Had to be big so the people on the back row could see it.  It will be framed with a black frame, and all the illustrations will be hung in the auditorium during this series of lessons. We've already had some nice ones. There've been some high schoolers that have done a couple and everybody's got a different style and way of approaching their project.

I was convicted during this process of painting.  The Lord has blessed me in all areas in my life AND so richly with a talent for drawing and painting.  I have to confess that I haven't used my talent very much these last few years - for myself OR for the Lord.  Made me think about the lazy servant who went and hid his talent in the ground... No excuses - life just gets in the way, work gets in the way, family illness and death, and college kids, moving, selling one's house, etc.  It All gets in the way.  But those are excuses I know.  I didn't want to do this project at first either, and I griped and complained to my husband when I was asked to do it.  WHEN would I find the time???  I prayed about this, and I knew in my heart that I  needed to do it - not for me, but for God.  So I said YES.  How can one say  NO to God when asked to use one's talents for Him especially when He's done SO much for me?

I asked God to change my heart and help me get through this illustration and do a good job for Him.  It had been so long since I've done a project of this size.  But you know what happened?

The Lord must've helped me in this process because it went off without a hitch.  I had to use acrylic paints - I use oils almost exclusively.  Acrylics mix differently than oils, but I was able to mix and create the colors that I wanted and was pleased with the end result.

Oh it's not like a "painting" painting.  It's an illustration with big loud colors and not too much detail because it will be viewed across the auditorium.  It needed to be that way.  And I know that I was blessed by doing this project and that the Lord made it easy for me.  AND I GIVE HIM ALL THE GLORY AND THANKS for my talent and for the multiplied time to get this project done.  I pray that God may touch  lives through all the illustrations and that the Snapshots of Jesus may "stick" in the minds of those who view them and that we can ALL apply Jesus' lessons to our lives daily.

Remember - if you'd like to view the pics larger, just click on the photo ----

Below is probably the best photo of these three.  Can you see the Light that radiates from the Lord?

John 8:12  "When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, 'I am the Light of the world.   Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the Light of Life' ".   NIV

Suspected Church Arsonists in East Texas CAUGHT!

Posted: Feb 21, 2010 5:49 PM CST

The following was released by the Texas Department of Public Safety:

EAST TEXAS - Authorities have charged and arrested two men in connection with one of the 10 church arson fires that occurred in East Texas beginning on Jan. 1, 2010. Three other churches were targets of attempted break-ins, and investigators believe those and the remaining nine burned churches are also connected to these men. The investigations are ongoing.

The two men arrested are Jason Robert Bourque, 19, of Lindale and Daniel George McAllister, 21, of Ben Wheeler. They had attended the First Baptist Church in Ben Wheeler together. Bourque was arrested without incident in Van Zandt County and transported to Smith County and McAllister was arrested without incident by Texas Rangers in San Antonio and also transported to Smith County.

"By working closely with our local and federal partners, we brought tremendous resources to this investigation, working around the clock, and culminating in these arrests. The arsons of these houses of worship were despicable and cowardly acts, and Texas won't stand for this kind of criminal activity," said Steven C. McCraw, director of the Texas Department of Public Safety.

"Clearly this effort shows that Texas law enforcement has mastered the art and science of working together, sharing information, and dedicating the necessary resources to bring cases such as these to a successful resolution, and these officers are to be commended," McCraw said.

The men were arrested by the task force created to find these individuals and stop these arsons. The task force includes hundreds of local law enforcement officers, more than 200 personnel from the DPS, including Texas Rangers, Highway Patrol troopers and Criminal Investigation Division agents, fixed-wing and helicopter aviation assets and the DPS Communications and Fusion Centers, and numerous FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) agents and specialists. A call to a task force tip line alerted investigators to the two men.

Agencies involved in the arrests included the DPS; FBI; ATF; Tyler Police Department, Henderson County Sheriff's Office and Fire Department; Van Zandt County Sheriff's Office and Fire Department; Wills Point Police Department; Smith County Sheriff's Office, Fire Department and Fire Marshal's Office; Athens Police Department; and the Canton Police Department.

The task force was formed on Jan. 20, and investigators worked cases in a three-county area covering 2,648 square miles and an estimated 713 churches. Investigators from numerous agencies worked together to develop leads, and local agencies assisted with nightly patrols of churches in the area to prevent additional arsons.

Dates and locations of arsons:

01-01-2010, 9:02 AM – Little Hope Baptist Church – Canton, TX;
01-01-2010, 11:05 AM – Faith Baptist Church – Athens, TX;
01-11-2010, 10:40 PM – Grace Community Church, Athens, TX;
01-12-2010, 12:09 AM – Lake Athens Baptist Church, Athens, TX;
01-16-2010, 6:30 PM – Tyland Baptist Church, Tyler, TX;
01-17-2010, 6:33 PM – First Church of Christ Scientist, Tyler, TX;
01-20-2010, 7:37 AM – Prairie Creek Fellowship, Lindale, TX;

02-08-2010, 8:47 PM – Dover Baptist Church, Tyler, TX;
02-08-2010, 9:44 PM – Clear Springs Missionary Baptist Church, Lindale, TX.

In addition to the arsons at the above listed churches, there were attempted break-ins at the following churches:

02-07-2010, 12:19 AM, Heritage Baptist Church, Tyler, TX;
02-08-2010, 9:19 PM, Clearview Church, Tyler, TX;
02-08-2010, 9:39 PM, Pine Brook Baptist Church, Tyler, TX.

This is what we've been dealing with here in Tyler, and the East Texas area for the last couple of months.  Area churches have been beefing up security and installing cameras, hiring security guards, and using church members as volunteer security.  We haven't heard the whole story behind the reasons for the arson yet.  But I'm glad they've been caught. One of my sons attends the University of Texas at Tyler and I understand that one of these guys does, too.  It was said that they were arrested at their homes without incident, so it appears that they have the right guys.  Our communities have rallied together and been an involved and united front against this attack on God's people.  Our farm is about 8 miles from one of the fires. There is STILL one man on the loose they are looking for. There were 3.

I hope they catch this last guy & that that's the end of it.  I was touched by the Sheriff's office statement on TV. After thanking all those involved in the capture, the officer said "most of all, thanks be to God." There are several of these congregations that lost their entire church. But as people of God, they are undaunted. They will re-build. After, the church is NOT a building - it's the family of Christians that worship there.
