Goodbye Garden!

Well, another garden bites the dust (literally)!  Garden of 2010 is officiallly over.  Plowed up, scooped up, most of it dumped in the compost bin.  We started composting this year.  Burned the cornstalks and a little bit of other stuff.  Cornstalks take too long to break down and the cobs take FOREVER.  I'm thinking about a fall garden, but right now it's too blasted hot to even worry about it.  We'll see, when August or September rolls around.  Usually we have a nice long summer that runs into November sometimes.  At least, our temps take a long, long time to cool off.

This little patch of dirt produced enough cucumbers to make about 3.5 quarts of pickles (and I even gave some away), green beans and purple hull peas to keep frozen  for eatin' for awhile into the winter, onions and potatoes that we're still eatin' on, jalapeno peppers, bell peppers, and serranos and GOBS of tomatoes that were turned into gallons and gallons of hot salsa (along with our peppers &  onions).  It's been a good year for the garden and given me so much pleasure in taking care of.

This fall promises to be extra busy as we start renovations and cosmetic work to our home. Me, myself and moi will be handling most of that.  Once all done, we're putting it up for sale.  It's almost time to permanently move to the farm.  It's been about 3.5 years now since we got the farm and I'm so ready to get out there.

You know, I grow nostalgic thinking about selling our home. We've been in that home for 20+ years. Princess was a toddler when moved from our tiny little first home into this bigger house where we raised our kids.  Adam and Josh were still quite young, too.  I still see the scuff marks on the walls, the baseboards.  The fingernail polish that Princess spilled still stains the vanity in the bathroom - tiny dots, but there nonetheless. There once was a tussle over something, I forget what, and there is a bedroom door that has a crack in it where one of the boys put a fist through it... When I look at the living room, I see where our Christmas tree has stood for 20+ Christmases and the nails under the mantle where the kids hung their stockings.  And all the family pictures that are scattered throughout the house are still smiling back at me.

This house is going on 30 years old and it needs a little facelift.  We've painted and replaced carpet a couple of times, re-wallpapered, and all the usual things that folks do their homes. The carpet has some stains that the cleaners couldn't get out from our family nights when we all ate pizza in the living room and watched movies together... or the kids had friends over.  There's scratches on one of my kitchen walls where one of our dogs decided to find out what sheetrock did when you scratched at it... There is a hole banged in the laundry room wall where the doorstop finally gave out and the door knob started hitting the wall.

I can still see my boys in their bunk beds with their dinosaur bedspreads and my baby girl in her little rocking chair in her pink room rocking one of her baby dolls.  We had so much fun here!  We had a lot of great times here, me and the kids.  I stayed home with them until the boys were in highschool and Princess was in Jr. High.  I feel so fortunate to have been able to do that.  We had our fusses and our tears, but more than that, we have a close-knit family and no matter what happened, we always stuck together and supported each other.

Our little pomeranian, Cookie, who we had for 13 years, is buried in a little wooden box in the backyard under the cedar tree.  The big old hackberry tree in the corner of the backyard is just about dead. Lightning struck it and it split, but I can see the 3 story treehouse that my boys built and played in, scaring me to death when they pulled the trampoline nearby and jumped from the top floor of the treehouse onto the trampoline!

OUR house was where all the kids came to play, where the kids would invite their friends.  I was the cool mom and we always had so much fun!  Our grocery bill was enormous cuz I always had snacks and stuff for the kids.  We had sleepouts and sleepovers here, too.  The kids would drag all their sleeping bags out onto the trampoline and sleep out there.  When I'd get up in the morning, they'd usually all be in the house!  And Princess had to do whatever her big  brothers did!  They bounced her off the trampoline when she was about 7 or 8 and her arm got broken.  So it was off to the emergency room...

Sooooo many memories.  It's going to be SO hard when we sell this house and close the front door for the last time.  I keep trying to tell myself that 'ITS JUST A HOUSE', but it's been our HOME.  But HOME is where the heart is and our hearts are moving on.  We'll be making new memories!

We've been gradually cleaning things out, throwing away, and boxing up to move.  Most of our stuff is still here, but alot of it we've already disposed of.  I'm hoping we can be done with our fix-ups before the holiday season starts, but that may be a little premature.  Depends on the weather, schedules, etc.  Tony and I will be alone for the first time since the kids were born (and we ARE excited about that - my mom says it's like a second honeymoon!).  It's a sad time and a happy time!  We've had a little taste of no-kids for a bit, but it will be permanent after we move.  Tony and I are both looking forward to this big change in our lives, but I'm also a little sad.  We can't keep two places, and it's time to move on.

Well, this post certainly took a direction of its own, didn't it???  I was going to show you alot of pictures here, but sadly they'll have to wait.  One of 'em was a dead copperhead, so you probably don't wanna see that one anyway...  I've taken too much of your time just reminiscing this afternoon. Guess I'm in that kind of mood...

Still haven't gotten to my peach cobbler yet.  Have you seen Debbie Wisdom's blog?  She had peach cobbler on there and a great recipe to try - I think you should pop on over to visit her!  Nothin' like a warm fresh peach cobbler with ice cream on it in the summer time!  I think that'll make me feel better! Don't you???

Summertime....

Sorry I've been so remiss in posting...  Life is so busy on the farm, and it seems there is a never-ending list of things to do and to keep us up late.  I HAVE thought about you all and have made a few visits here and there.  Hang with me here....

This is what we've been doing for the last week...

Hay is being cut and baled all over the farm...

Pipe fences are being constructed over on the east side of the farmhouse...

Old barbed wire fencing is gettin' torn down... seems like this fencing business is an on-going thing, as you farmers/ranchers know....

This tractor is probably the best thing that we've ever bought for the farm.  It's amazing the amount of work and the different kinds of work that one can accomplish with this little baby...

And me???   Well,  let me show you ----

From  pickin'...
to  ripenin'....
to  eatin' !!!!!
I've been puttin' up peach jam the last few days.  I've already finished off the first jar by MYSELF.  Peach is my absolute FAVORITE of all the jams and jellies!  It's my very favorite fruit, too!

This weekend promises fresh  PEACH COBBLER  and  HOME MADE PEACH ICE CREAM!!!

And these peaches are only a drop in the bucket.  We've got lots more between me and Dad.  We'll be peelin'  em and freezin'  em this weekend, too, I imagine!

The dadgum birds are trying to peck holes in the peaches, too.  I know we gotta share with the animals, but good grief!  Cain't somebody learn them birds to eat off the same peach!  I mean, every time they come by they wanna peck a different peach!  I hung Walmart bags all in the peach trees and also bright shiny CD's, hoping to scare them off. I'm SURE it looks quite trashy (no pun intended).   But I guess there's plenty of peaches to go around...

Y'all have a great week!  I'll be back with pictures of our yummy peach treats this weekend!
Keep ya gown down!

Seating Arrangement

For 2 years I've been watching and waiting for just the right chair for the living room at the farmhouse. I think I've found it!  On Craigslist, I ran across this cute shabby chair and ottoman for cheap and the lady lived about an hour away from me.  I emailed her and she answered  back and it was done!  Hubby hauled me over there after work and we scooped it up.  I thought I was actually looking for a leather chair, but it hasn't materialized and i thought this one would fit the bill.  I'll get Tony a leather chair/ottoman when we get our new house at the farm built.  Whadaya think?  I've been piddling around with how to arrange everything as the room is small and there are two antique china cabinets I'm keeping and some other stuff that has to stay...

This little farmhouse cottage is a mish-mash of texture, color and style.  Not quite Shabby Chic, not quite Cottage, not quite all antique, not quite all vintage, not quite all primitive.  It's garage sale stuff, estate sale stuff, some antiques from the family, hand-me-downs from family - mostly grandmothers' stuff on both sides, and last but not least, some treasures pulled from the dumpster at my work at the storage facility (you'd be surprised what people throw away when they get tired of hauling stuff around...)

Yes, I admit, I AM A DUMPSTER DIVER.  Actually, a dumpster "fisher".  I refuse to actually get into the dumpster.  I have a couple of long sticks and a piece of metal that I've fashioned a hook of sorts on one end  that can reach most stuff.  Anything I can't reach that is absolutely, positively a MUST-HAVE, I get my husband or son to come and dig it out for me.  Sometimes you can use a box for a scooper.  I can get real innovative when it comes to digging a "treasure" out of the dumpster.

Only thing is, our dumpster sits just across from Ewing Irrigation, and they are a busy, busy place.  They sell lawn sprinkler stuff.  Landscaping, etc.  I have to be a great joke to the fellows working there and their customers.  I could probably sell tickets to this show. That's another reason I'm not getting into the dumpster.

I've actually found quite a few really neat things that I've taken home and used. Books, lawn chairs, boxes of office supplies, a sweet antique floor lamp (in my living room), antique dishes and pottery, a nice farmy painting print that is hanging in my bedroom, some power tools for my husband, this list goes on...

Found these two little antique/vintage prints at a garage sale recently - I thought they were sweet and they're in their original frames, too.

Well, I'll wind it up.  Princess is back at school, and we are back at work and our regular schedules.  Three weeks til we leave for Mexico.  I'm really looking forward to a break AND having all my kids with me.  First time in a few years to have that.  And our best friends and their kids are going.  I'll be sure to share pictures of their vacation home in Akumal so you can feel bad for me.  It'll be just terrible I'm sure...

Keep yer gown down!

Savannah Style...

Good morning people!  Lookie here what I won!  Manuela at The Pleasures of Homemaking had a wonderful giveaway awhile back and SEE WHO WON - ME!  The prize was this beautiful coffee table book from Paula Deen.  It is a gorgeous book by a true Southern Belle - Paula talks perfectly normal to me  y'all. I don't know why people go on about the way she talks .....

Anyway, I would love to share a few photos from it with y'all from this book if ya don't mind...

It has beautiful outside dining layouts............wouldn't you just love to attend THIS picnic???

......or spend the night in this quaint little bedroom...........

...............or take your mint julep and peach cobbler on this lovely porch.......

...........or howdy at your neighbors from this veranda...........

........how 'bout adding a little whimsey to your beachside cottage..............
..........me, myself, and I?  I really like this rustic, more primitive style.......

.......and I LOVE this front porch all decorated for fall!  Isn't it gorgeous????........

........and who could forget Christmas in Savannah?  Why, it's mahvelous!

Manuela, thank you so much for having such a nice giveaway - and for drawing my name!  I love this book. I keep picking it up to gaze at the beautiful photos of Paula's home and hometown.  It's great for inspiration - beauty to the senses - and of course, "southern" in style, which we all know is what I'm all about.

Y'all come on back now, ya hear?

He Thinks His Tractor's Sexy!

Handsome Hubby got himself a new toy!
Finally did it this weekend on Saturday.  He's been wantin' one for two years now and finally decided to take the leap and bite the bullet.  We needed it here on the farm.  Ya just gotta have a tractor if you got land.  There's always so much mowing/ shredding, movin' dirt, leveling, and stuff that a farmer/rancher's gotta get done.  We all got to drive it.  It's not a huge tractor.  When/if  Tony takes over the hay production one of these old days, he'll have to get bigger equipment but this'n 'll do just fine for now.
Princess and her dad were doing some cleaning up around the barn area and some burning.  She's mastered that "flipping the bucket" up full of dirt.  Takes some coordination to the the "flip" just right and not lose all your dirt...

Daddy had his turn - I think he was more excited about the getting the tractor than Tony!  He did some mowing and grating... stayed over at our place ALL DAY...

Mom of course had to have her picture made looking all farmer's wife-y... very cute, mom!

And last but not least,  me , myself, and I  --- I did drive it around and piddle a bit with it....

A good July 4th holiday was had by all.  We stayed out at the farm all weekend, and ate way too much. I don't have internet out there, so no July 4th post.  But you can bet that we were thinking about all that it meant.   And we're out in the country, so there were fireworks going off all around us - we didn't have to buy - just sat outside and enjoyed....

I was in the house watching the (Macy's) fireworks display at some point and the great music numbers on TV.  It would be so neat to be there on the Hudson River for a display like that and hear all the old patriotic songs and sing along.  My heart swelled with pride just listening on TV.  At the end, when they played the Star-Spangled Banner I did have to stand up and put my hand over my heart and sing this moving song with the band & the rest of the nation.  It still brings a tear to my eye...  We flew our flag...

We cooked out a couple of times, spent special times with family members and beloved friends, ate WAY too much.  I finished canning a dozen jars of peach preserves - YUM.  Also, put up another dozen pints of hot sauce... did some yard work, went to church, and we just had a wonderful 3 day weekend all the way around.

An aside... you see how low my flag is to the ground?  Well, Sam and Alice have noticed.  They love to run and jump up and hang on the flag with their little toenails!  They think it's great fun when they're out wrestling in the front yard and attacking each other to include my nice flag in their antics.  They look like little mini-Tarzans as they go leaping through the air and swinging around on my flag.  Note to self:  PUT FLAG AWAY TIL NEXT HOLIDAY...

We move Princess back to school this weekend... if...
                                                                                       if...
                                                                                                  if...

IF we can git her off the tractor!!!  There she goes again!  Mowing the fence rows!  Princess, wait! Come back!  You have to go back to college!!!!
