Autumn 2013, My Sister Lisa

Knock, knock?

Anybody out there?

Autumn is under way at Sand Flat Farm.  Our temps have been in the 70's the last week or so and will continue.  I still have time to winterize the chickie coop with plastic around the north side AND finish getting the garden put to bed.  We pulled and burned alot this past weekend, but there is still about a third of it to get done.  Flower beds need mulching again, altho the falling leaves do make a good protective cover.

Shout out to Kathy at Spot On Cedar Pond - we've had some rain lately, and the gophers are popping up everywhere!  The moles, too!  I've got traps set all over the yard.  Not worried about the fields - our hay man takes care of that himself.  Gypsy can be spotted at any time of day with only her rear end sticking up above the hay digging for gophers.  (should be one more cutting before the first freeze)  You should see the holes she digs in our yard.  While it pains me to have to fill her holes, if she catches a gopher, that pleases me (I guess).  I was a little perturbed that she dug a huge trench in my rose bed that almost unearthed one of the bushes...

In other news, chickens are molting - they are hideous-looking and my #1 HCIC (head chicken in charge) is so embarrassed at her frock that she generally stays off to herself right now looking so forlorn.  Usually, she is keeping everybody in line and is always first in line for treats and to get out the door when they are ranging for the day.  She usually walks around with her chest puffed out like a little rooster and is not timid about attacking somebody that might get in her way to the food bowl...

Don't know how the autumn skies are where you are, but this is what our sunrises have been looking like lately.  They were utterly gorgeous - I've been out walking early...  Have to confess that I did amp up the color just a titch (like Vee says) but not much!  They were beautiful skies, and it makes me feel like heaven is coming down!

This is Texas Ranger Stadium in Arlington, Texas.  Many of you will recognize it.  This was the site on September 21 of the Ovarian Cancer Walk for the Cure.  Just about my whole family participated (including various significant others of the kids)  We walked in honor of my sister, Lisa.  She was there in fine form, but could not do the walk, but what a cheerleader she was!  It was a 5 K and we walked the course around the new Cowboy Stadium and Arlington Stadium and park areas.  It was a stellar day, and SO humbling to see all the family/friend teams walking for those they love.  Lots of survivors there, too!!!  We'll be doing this again!  Our team was called the Lollipops - my sister was called "Lollie" when she was young and momma still calls her that.  My niece named our team and had our Tshirts done - they were so cute!  Then we all went out to eat at Babe's to celebrate!

L-R,   Lisa, Me, Mom, Lisa's daughter, & my daughter.  The menfolks were around somewhere... It was a great day!  Lisa has finished the first round of chemo.  3 weeks ago, she and I went to MD Anderson in Houston and she has begun another round.  Her hair is coming back and I like to pet her head.  She feels like a puppy...  Continue to pray for Lisa - she's a fighter and she has the most positive attitude!  God is with her and she is with Him every step of the way.  Thank you so much!!!

This 'N That...

Oh JOY!  We've been having scattered showers for the last few days, and let me tell you - right here near the middle of July, it's been WONDERFUL!!!  Thank you, Lord!  After last year's drought conditions and 100+ temps for 2 months, it's been such a blessing!  It's been a bit cooler the last few days, too...

I love in the afternoons and evenings to see these big thunderheads building up - they are so beautiful!

The evening sky last night was so pretty after the rain!

This was our sunset!

Boy howdy, are y'all in for a real treat.  Not only do I have a video of my chickens but you get to hear my East Texas accent!  You think Arkansans are bad, just wait til you hear this (sorry, Arkansas)!  We had divested the tomato plants of some horn-worms awhile back and one of my Black Stars had swindled it away from the other chickens...  (besides, everybody else does little videos of their chickens so why can't I?)  Just a little over a minute - that's all, can you stand it for a little over a minute?  I watched this first and though, "eh, it's not so interesting," til I got to nearly the end and heard myself talking.  Then I thought, "WHOA - my peeps might like a good laugh!"

Ooooweeee!  Is that accent bad or what!  I hate to hear myself on audio!  (scratching my foot - fire ant bites...)  Don't these chicks have a nice place to live?  Dad did such a good job on my coop and run!

Josh has missed his chihuahua, Bug!  He loves this little pooch.  Lindsey just shakes her head.  But she's got a kitty-cat, Alice, that she is crazy about so I guess they're even (remember Alice? She used to live here with me...).  Bug was so glad to see Josh, too!  I was really hoping that nothing would happen to her before they got home from New Zealand.  She's about 13 now and is having problems getting around.

Bug was so excited to see Josh, too!

Well, y'all have a great Thursday - I've got some more tomatoes to process into spaghetti sauce today, and a few more pickles to make before the cucumbers turn to mush.  Take it easy on yourself!  Sending you all a BIG HUG from BUG!

Skies on the Farm

My breath is just taken away from me sometimes when I look up to the heavens.  I don't think there is anything that makes me feel closer to God in nature.  It's like when I'm looking up and searching the skies, the clouds, the sun, the stars, my face is lifted up towards the heavens and God is looking down on me. I know He can see me all the time, but I like for Him to see me looking up to Him.  His light is infinitely brighter than the sun, yet the sun is the brightest thing we can see. And when that radiance from the sun shines down onto my upturned face, it feels like the very light of His face is warming my soul and loving on me.  I love skies.

I love to sit in the dining room with the morning sun streaming through the window while I pray.  Especially in the winter, I need that warmth and light so much - His light and warmth.  Even at night with the moon shining down, it feels like He's right there keeping me company.

You know when there are lots of thunderheads in the sky like there has been the last couple of weeks?  And the sun is behind them and there're rays of sunbeams streaming out?  That is my idea of heaven sort of.  That the radiance of the Lord is so brilliant that it has to stay behind the cloud or we just couldn't bear to see it. But someday we will!!!

There!  Can you see it?  A very faint rainbow!  Actually, there were two, but the other one's behind the pine tree on the right.  We have so many trees here that it's hard to take sky pictures.  Out at the farm, I love it, cuz we can see all around us.  I love the promise of the rainbow, too.  We got no rain, but some beautiful skies this evening!  (OOOPS!  I lost my rainbow picture - will have to fix that!  OK now it's fixed...)

Gotta throw one kitty picture in.  Here's Sam upon meeting Hayley's dog, Bella.  He bowed up and started spittin' and clawin'.  Look how he stands up on tip-toes.  He was not at all happy!

Well, gotta keep it short and sweet tonight, good buddies - keep your dress down!!!

Anchors Away! (and other stuff)

Hey guys - I promised you a picture of my Navy nephew so here he is.  We had a great time going out to eat Mexican food with the grandparents and my sister and my hubby.  Clay is my buddy. He's always been my buddy.  He kept hugging me like he was never gonna see me again!  Which I just ate right up!
He's a good nephew and a good son to his mother. For some reason I didn't get a picture of his mom and him.   Hmmm, I think my sis was supposed to send me some pics, but I haven't gotten them yet.  Shout out to MY SISTER!!!  ARE YOU LISTENING, SIS???  Clay will be going back out to sea and back to the middle east in a few weeks. He's heading back to California in a few days and I'm so glad I got to see him.
This is what we woke up to, I think it was Saturday morning after the storms rolling through the southeastern states.  We got some thunder, lightening and a few showers, but the bad stuff missed us.  Thank the Lord.

Looks like sunbeams from heaven, don't it?   Sorry I've been gone for a few days. My mother in law went back to her nursing facility.  She is doing remarkably well for an 80 year old woman. Hip surgery was the only surgery she's ever had in her life.  The nurse said she couldn't believe how strong MIL is.  Kathryn is up and walking around - she's using her walker, but half the time she forgets. I hope she doesn't fall again, but she's puttering around pretty well.

We spent alot of time out at the farm and my daughter came home over the weekend, too.  We've been busy to say the least.  My garden is doing well and so are the flowers. That little rain just really brought them out.  I'm trying to install perennials wherever possible, so I won't have to keep buying flowers every year. Of course, I'll need some annuals for fillers, but it'd be nice to have a constant garden without having to keep planting.  I've moved stuff around and built some new beds this year - still have at least 2-3 beds more to go around the farmhouse.  It's slow going but oh so fun!

PS - my daughter did well on her speech.  She didn't faint, didn't die of embarrassment or stutter.  So I'd say it was a great success.  We're waiting to hear whether she got into nursing school for the fall semester. We know she'll be in for the spring, but we're hoping for fall.  Keep your fingers crossed for us if you don't mind. She's always wanted to be a nurse.  She wants to be a traveling nurse or work on Mercy Ships or something.

Gotta run, my friends.  I have a hungry man coming in a bit, and he'll be expecting some grub on the table. Let me go see what I can scrounge up.  Hmmm... We've been eating lots of venison lately - it's so lean.  He grilled some backstrap and some steaks Saturday over a mesquite fire.  They were SO good and so tender - I can't think of anything I like better!  YUM.  We had broccoli from the garden and a big ole baked potato.  We're getting some green onions that are pretty good size now, and I saw this weekend that there are a bunch of baby squash - yellow and zucchini.  The purple hull peas and green beans are up and so's the corn.  The tomatoes have blooms all over them.  I'm so ready for summer tomatoes!

Take care - keep your gown down!  Lemme hear from ya!

Random stuff....

I promised a picture of the new young lady in Adam's life that is bringing him home to Texas more often. I think she's a doll!I ran across this photo the other day. Thought I'd share it with you. This is my daughter wearing my wedding gown & holding the veil. She found it in the closet and wanted to try it on. It's a perfect fit! Just don't notice the other kids laying on the couches, the fan in the floor and the half of a dog in the foreground. Oh yeah, the TV.This is a random shot of the side of what was once an old sand floor garage. We're using it for storage right now. We plan to pour a concrete floor in. We started to take it down and build a new metal building for a garage, but couldn't bring ourselves to do it. I'm planning a flower bed along this side with daylilies, roses and blue plumbago. I love perennials. I think the oranges of the lilies will look good with the rusty old roof. That roof still doesn't leak...A few shots of my garden (again- ya'll gettin' tired of it?) Shed in the background, sunflowers on the back right, potatoes on back left against the picket fence, corn in front of potatoes, zucchini in the foreground and peppers just the right of those.
CAn you see the tomatoes peeking out from under the leaves? So far so good this year. Last year, I found ONE of those huge light green caterpillars eating his way through one of my plants. Squashed him good! So far, none this year. Below are some green beans about ready for picking. I am trying something new to me this year. I'm staggering planting times for the green beans and peas. That way, they won't all be ready at once and I can harvest and put away in the freezer at 2 different times.
Ok, here's something I thought I'd try - I thought it'd be too hot here in Texas, but so far the broccoli is alive and kicking. I've got several plants and they all have some big heads of broccoli in them almost ready for picking. This is an older picture where they're still kinda small. Also, I had a problem with something eating the leaves, but fortunately sevin dust has taken care of that.
I'll leave you all with a couple of shots of the afternoon sky last week while I was weeding. I was hoping for rain, but we didn't get any at my particular location until a few days later. There were storms blowing up all around us - to the north, to the east and to the west. It was beautiful, it was windy, it was cooler, it was humid, there was lightning and thunder, but not a drop at our farm that day. I sure enjoyed watching the sky tho.
There's nothing like a stormy, cloudy sky to make one feel so insignificant on this big ole earth. And when the sun is trying to peak through amidst all that wonderment, it makes me think that heaven is coming down and the light of the Lord is shining on my face!

Til next time, take care my lovelies!
