Ever Heard of This?

We are having a problem with moles in the ground at the farm. The soil is loose and sandy (duh.. Sand Flat Farm). They get in my garden and tear everything up. We also find that we have a little field mouse or two in our home. We went to Dollar General last night to get some sticky traps for the mice, and a young mother with no front teeth and a baby on her hip and a toddler in her cart offered this advice:

"My grandma always had moles in her yard and her garden. She said all you have to do to get rid of 'em is to stick a piece of Juicy Fruit gum down in their holes. They love it, but it stops 'em up and they die. It'll take care of mice, too! It's alot cheaper than sticky traps."

I'll let you know if it works. I gotta go to Walmart and get some o' them big ole packs of gum... If any 'o ya'll have helpful hints on gettin' rid o' moles/mice, lemme know...

I have heard of this remedy for mole problems, but it is one of those myths that get around.....but hey, if you chew a lot of juicy fruit gum, might as well spit it out in a mole hole! (And why just Juicy Fruit ? )

We have a mole metropolis here on Cedar Pond, and the Moles are ever increasing and cultivating our place for their own comfort.

We catch a few a year, apparently there are many more ( or one industrious mole ) just replacing their fallen comrades.

Yes they do. To Kathy admission that they have a lot of moles. To the gum issue, I personally think that there are moles out there that like gum and started that rumour.

We have less than we used to. Dirt is diligent in trapping and we have fierce Rat Terriers, they have gotten a lot of vermin but I haven't seen any moles dead by them but they have chased them out. With Dirt hot on their heels (he doesn't want them to ever return!)

my DH just pointed out the error in the young woman's statement "my grandmother always had moles" - well if the gum thing works - why did she still have moles? Anyway - no help here - one of the few advantages of clay soil is moles don't much like it. Rat terriers are always a good idea - whether they do any ratting or not!

Vickie, I found this:http://www.molesbegone.com/
and this: http://www.forces-of-nature.net/topics/moles/Kill_Moles_With_Juicy_Fruit_Gum.htm when I googled moles and juicy fruit gum. I've heard about that method before but never used it. It appears as though it might work. We have a problem with crawdads digging up our yard because we have a creek. The only thing I can do about that is find a good recipe.
Hugs,
Sher

Thank you for swinging by and visiting my blog!

We had trouble too but one of our cats became a stalker and within about a week she had taken care of 4 and the problem was gone.

The gum sounds plausible and I will return to see what results you have.

Have a wonderful day
Jennifer

I've got moles galore tearing up my yard right now. That's not so bad, but the dog has to dig up the mole mounds to try and get the creature. The dog does more damage than the mole. It's so funny that you posted this, read my post today about my pack rat.

How interesting, juicy fruit gum. I will need to tell my friend who seems to be having this problem. Will be checking back to see if it worked.

Hugs :)
