Just checkin' in...

Hi friends! I've been so busy and I realized that it's been over a week since I posted. I've been able to read a few of your blogs at work, but that's been about it.

Good news is that we got a little bit of rain this morning early-early. We have had such hot dry temps for the last few weeks, hottest I've seen in several years, some near record highs. I know there's folks that are alot worse off than we are in other areas of Texas. Check out Berte's pecan farm at Riverbend Farm out west - she said their pecan crop this year is not going to be very good. I know there are others needin rain, too. Our yards and fields around here have been dry and brown and crackly for awhile. The weatherman said it'll be a little cooler in the 90's instead of the 100's + for hopefully most of next week.

My garden's gone to seed. Me and daddy picked all the last of the purple hull peas Wednesday after supper from his garden and we looked at the thermometer and it read 102 - this was at 6:30 - 7:00 p.m. It was so hot, but we needed to get 'em up. He was fixin' to plow 'em under. I started feelin a little nauseated and dizzy so we tried to hurry.

I WISH I would've had my camera. Daddy has this big fan motor that he built a frame for. Well, he got the bright idea to run an extension cord from the shop out to the garden and pointed it on me 'n him while we were pickin' peas. It's so strong, it 'bout blew us away. But it stirred up some air and blew the wasps to smithereens (they love peas and the pea flowers), and of course a little sand. We looked a sight!!! We just rolled it along with us down the rows!!!! "You might be a redneck iffen.... you pick yer vegetables in the hot sun with a big ole shop fan a-blowin' on ya to cool ya off..."

Ahhh, country life. My mama said she didn't want any more peas cuz their freezer won't hold another thing. She doesn't like gettin' in the garden because of bees and wasps. If you don't bother them they won't bother you. I don't like em but I'm not scared of em. We just go ahead and pick and they move out of the way. Mom's not really into all the farm-y stuff. Daddy and me ARE. So I carried all the peas home - nearly another 2 bushels, and I've been shellin peas the last coupla nights. My fingers are purple...

Well, we are celebrating the 21st birthday of my daughter this weekend. Her brothers won't b3 here but we will do something fun and nice for her, and of course see the grandparents sometime, too. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend, hope it's cooler wherever you are, and hope & pray that those who need it get some rain. I'll see you next week!

Happy birthday to your daughter!

I have two kids. My son was 22 this year and my daughter 26.

I did peas this week also, but I bought mine since I did not plant any. Got us one whole bowl full after snapping them. Aren't I pitiful?

Your Daddy sounds like a pretty smart man! We need fans and shade and SPF 100 this summer in Texas. My chickens are living but not thriving in this heat - looking forward to this weekend's potential for rain. I hate to see the pastures crack and get powdery like this. Stay cool and those peas sound mighty good -a pork chop, some cornbread and a mess of beans - yummo! Happy B'day to the Princess

What great fun in the garden. The fan is priceless.

I'll be asking for advice as I prepare for next year's garden. Do you put one in for the fall?

A fan in the garden, well I'll be! Man, 90 degrees really gives me heat stroke. I get very sick in the kind of heat you are talking about. I hope you get more rain.

A fan in the garden, with you and your Dad picking peas in the breeze!

Hello Vickie!

A fan in the garden, now that gave me a giggle. I had to read your post to my husband, we both got a smile from it. Whatever works!! Your dad has to be a wonderful man to be close to...what a blessing for the both of you.

I moved my blog to WordPress. The link is on my Blogger blog. I put a lot of prayer into the move. So far, I seem to be having less headaches, with time freed up. I like it. I am hoping everyone eventually adds my new URL to their current Blog Roll, praying that my friends come and visit. :)

What a giggle we got on reading about the fan in the garden...but if it cools you off that is great! I will need to bring one out when I start working on my garden. Your Dad had a great idea.
My summer garden did not make it. Hopefully my fall garden will.

Hugs :)

I wished you had had the camera too! Although your description was quite lively itself! You sound like you had a good weekend!

I wish you had had a camera with you - that would have been a great picture! Pickin peas with a big ole fan blowing on ya! (I'll have to tell daddy about that one, but I think his pea patch may be way too far from the house - that would be one long extension cord!)

Happy b'day to your daughter.

Thank you for visiting my blog recently--I am very happy to have found your blog, and look forward to visiting again!
I hope that your daughter had a wonderful birthday!
Sounds like your summer has been a scorcher! It has been very pleasant here (in TN) this week, but I'm sure the hot and muggy weather will return soon.
I really enjoyed reading the post about fishing with your Daddy. He sounds a lot like my Daddy- I, too, was a Daddy's girl. My Daddy wasn't a mechanic, but a carpenter, and he could fix or build anything! We used to get up at the crack of dawn to go fishing--those were really good days. He has been gone for almost 15 years now, and not a day goes by that I don't miss him.
--Didn't mean to ramble on for so long.....I hope you enjoy a sweet summer weekend-
Blessings,
Pam

I have many happy memories of shelling peas with my grandmother and purple fingers are a part of them. I can tell you and your dad are very close, that is so sweet.

Thank you for visiting and for your sweet comments on my studio. I hope you have a wonderful birthday celebration with your daughter.

Vickie - thank you so much for stopping by the blog and your encouraging words - I know you have had your share of rough spots this year and yet --- we both keep turning to the Lord and digging in the dirt! I think heaven and earth can keep us going on until the Lord calls us home. Thanks - one Texan to another - you words are as comforting as a porch swing and some sweet tea!
