I'M OFFICIALLY A CHICKEN FARMER!!!

Well, sort of...

See, we were out at the farm today shootin'.  Got new guns. Me, Dad, Tony, and Adam.  Dad had to sight in some new scopes on his deer rifles. We had a coupla new handguns to practice on so we set up some targets down towards the pond so we wouldn't shoot anybody over the next hill.

SOOO, anyway I was walking up to the house and I heard some "...paawwwk..." sounds in the front flowerbed where my rose bushes are. I thought it sounded like a chicken. Upon closer inspection, I discovered it WAS a chicken - a cute, scraggly little hen - I don't know what kind, some of you will have to tell me. She was a little shy, she'd come out of the bushes and come near, but I couldn't touch her. I don't know where  she came from.  We have distant farms around but not anywhere near that a chicken would want to venture as far as our farm.

I had some dried corn and lettuce and some dried oatmeal that I threw out for her. She seemed to like it, and she was also scratching around for bugs and stuff and pecking little weeds.  I put out a bowl of water for her and she immediately got herself a drink and went back to scratching.  She looked a little thin to me. She's got a good hiding place in the middle of all the rose bushes, but it might get cold. I figured she was probably a free ranging chicken so she was probably used to being out in the weather somewhat. But I had an old bushel basket which I turned on its side and put a bunch of hay in it for her. She wouldn't let me catch her. I'll go check on her after work tomorrow or the next day. I really hope a hawk or owl or dog doesn't get her. She's far away from home, wherever that is. I don't know what else to do for her. She'll probably be ok if she'll stay up close to the house where she is. If she hangs around for a few days, I'll stop by the feed store and get some scratch and see if there's a better shelter to be had for her at the farm.

Do people drop chickens off at country homes like they do dogs and cats? I wonder.... I hope she makes it! If she does, and if she stays at our farm, then I'm officially in the chicken business!  I've been wanting chickens for so long, but haven't been able to have them since we're not there every single day. Maybe she's telling me that it's time to have chickens or it's time to move out the farm permanently?  Only the chicken knows!

Oh, yes, it's so a sign! One year, I got a shiny little black lab puppy! Gave it to one of the local vets who still has her. Being in the country, you have to expect critters to come up. Just had a coyote in the back pasture this weekend, moving around in my uncle's cows...
Happy Chicken Farming!

That is too funny! Maybe we should all start hanging out our wish lists on the front gate posts..
POSTED..Please leave milk goats, laying hens, beef cattle and dogs only if they come with papers and proof of value in the show ring.

how fun - she might also be on a pilgrimage to some chicken shrine - so don't be disappointed if she stays to rest a bit and moves on her way. We had some guineas move through our place a couple of years ago - just stayed long enough to each scratch, poop on the porch and move along. It is a good sign though - hope you get your chickens - I'm due out at our Coop Mahal right now to check on the cluckers.

probably a free ranger that got chased away by a varmint. She's a cutie but now she'll need a buddy :)
Isn't it so cool to get new guns? Did you get it for Christmas?

the weasel - I Saw the people dump him across the road in a field , but he wound up living under our house in the ventilation system , I thought he had moved away , but from my cats hissing I thin he may still be under the house somewhere. Weasels are wild out here , but I think the people had rehabed him and thought our field was a perfect location , having been handled by humans it sought out human shelter. I dont mind as long as it eats mice and stays away from the children. My big tom although does not seem to like him and I am sure he will go away by spring.

Oh she's a pretty little hen even if she is skinny. Hope that she hangs out with you and perhaps that way you'll decide if you can handle being a chicken farmer...love the fresh look here!

Your header is beautiful!!! I had a rooster chase me when I was 3 years old, and silly me, I've been afraid of chickens ever since then. Your little chicken is cute though...... she needs a name?

Don't know anything about chickens either! Someone dropped off a kitten about a month ago. I thought Fritz was going to have a nervous breakdown, worrying about that cat. It hung around a couple of days and then disappeared. Whew...thank goodness. I don't think Fritz could handle it!
Hugs,
Tara

I think she is a sign that yes, you do need chickens! You know, cat food or dog food will suffice for just one chicken for awhile, especially dried cat food....and I bet she will eventually reward you with an egg or 2 or 3!

What a fun time, new guns! My husband wants to teach me how to shoot and I think I will be taking him up on his offer, maybe I will get my own gun out of this deal too! Bang bang~and a Happy New Year!

Just catching up on my blog reading.... I think your chicken is some kind of game hen, and she may fly up into the trees to roost at night, staying away from varmits. She will certainly lay eggs but may need a nice variety of food stuffs to encourage her and seems like you have that covered. I would certainly encourage you to get her some company :)
