Around the Farm

I'm kinda tired these days with the Mother in Law and work and kids and such, so today I'm just showing you some photos around the farm.  We spent the night out there Monday evening - love it this time of year. I'm working in my vegetable garden and re-doing some flower beds and getting things cleaned up and planted for this year.  I got up a little before 7 Tuesday morning - early morning is my favorite time of the day at the farm.  The birds are singing, the air is still a little crisp, and there's always a breeze blowing at Sand Flat Farm. It was invigorating!
I have a whole bunch of iris.  I picked some up free that somebody was giving away at a garage sale. This one is gold, not yellow, and I have some purple and white, too.
Can you see me in this previous picture?
This flower bed with iris and hydrangeas is one that I moved. The hydrangeas were not well established yet in another location that was just too hot.  I've always heard that hydrangeas do best on the north side of the house. But I thought I knew better, of course, and could magically make them grow where I wanted. Nope, should have listened to the farmers & gardeners. So I made this flower bed with my own two little hands. Dug it all up, worked in some good planting mixture, arranged the edging, collected the rocks, etc.  I'll plant some annuals in the front section of the bed.  Our big oak tree stands over this bed to shade it all day. It gets early morning and late evening sun, so I hope it will thrive here.  Do you like my rock edging? I do, I think it's sort of cottage-y...
I'm adding another flower bed this year - an azalea bed with some big fuschia colored formosa azaleas and also some white mixed in.  They're supposed to do really well in our sandy soil here so I'm looking forward to next spring when they'll make their first showy appearance!  They still have a few unopened blossoms on them now. I waited to buy some until I could see them blooming.  I've bought them before just taking the word of the gardener as to what color they were and they turned out to be a different color. Sometimes even if they're tagged, they'll be MIS-tagged.  You just never know!
My little tin garage in the early morning light. I've already got petunias in the box, the lillies are coming up, the dianthus are beginning to bloom, and all my roses are about ready to POP!  My plumbago didn't make it through the snow this winter so I'm trying to decide what to fill in this bed with....  got any ideas?  I could always do annuals, but I'm really trying to establish some perennials here.
Here's my new morning glory that I've got to find a place for. It's an annual, but it re-seeds, so I need to find a kind of permanent place for it.  It's really a dark blue, and not purple like it looks here.  I also picked up these couple of old iron fence pieces that I will put in my flower gardens somewhere. I was wondering if I should paint them white first and let the white wear off?  Rust is nice, too, tho.

Well, my friends, I hope you are having a wonderful day, a beautiful springtime, and that you're getting your hands dirty like I am.  My husband fusses cuz I love to go barefoot while working in the garden (actually I go barefoot most of the year).  My heels are brown. Yuck.  I hate wearing hot shoes when the turned up dirt is so nice and cool!  And when I'm watering and it's hot, I love to spray my feet.  My feet are my temperature control for my body.  Does that make sense? And at this point in my life with being either constantly hot or having a cold shiver, it's all about comfort, right?  RIGHT!
Mr. Bunny wishes you a Hoppy Day!!!

Wow Vickie, What some beautiful pictures! I love the old metal garage and I would leave the old iron gates rusty but that is me. If it is rusty I love it. What a great garden you have. My soil is still a little wet and cold to plant my garden. The first of May I will be busy planting everything. Enjoy your day!!

Simply beautiful photos, of a simply beautiful time of day.

Please don't get too tired, with all your duties. Please. Please. Please.

Thanks for sharing your photos. I am getting to like it here in Texas. I know that in a few weeks it will be unbearable. Spring is gorgeous here. I love the pic of the rabbit.

I live on the outskirts of Houston, so I don't really count that. I was up Gruene and New Brunsfels way and out to San Antonio. It seems much nicer there. North of Houston seems nice too.

I am dreaming of getting out of the city and the urban sprawl.

Have a wonderful day.

You are a great photographer! What beautiful, peaceful and serene pictures. Your farm is so beautiful! I can't believe your garden - we can't even think of planting until the middle of May.

I love morning - the dew makes everything so green and inviting, you really captured it's beauty in your pictures, thanks for sharing a part of your life with us.

Thank you so much for stopping by my blog and encouraging me. We can encourage each other! You are a fabulous artist.

I know that you have so much on your plate right now, but please take time for yourself, don't over-do. Hug your sweet MIL . . . prayers are always with you and your family.

Hugs,
Barb

No wonder you love it there... I enjoyed seeing all your pictures...you've already done a lot of work! I used to prefer to go shoeless, but can't any longer without suffering for it. Golly, I am getting old.

You sure took some pretty pictures. I like to get up early too and I've been getting some yard maintanance done. You've done a wonderful job with your flower beds and choosing your flowers. I
go barefoot in the house, but can't stand to get my feet in the dirt:) You country girl ya!

So much to love about this post. You are funny about having to move the hydrangeas. Plants certainly do have preferences that we can't really work around.

I am a totally barefoot girl. My feet are a mess, but I know what you mean about temperature control and feet. I have to sleep with my feet sticking out of the covers or I am soooo very hot! My feet in enclosed shoes are very unhappy indeed.

I find myself wishing for a getaway such as yours but am reminding myself that we are busy enough right now without the added work....so, get thee behind me envy!

Take care. And have fun!

Thanks for your prayers, of late. I really appreciate them!

I like the plow, iris, big tree combo. It looks to natural. And, I really like the whole bed you did by hand. The rocks top it off.

Love bare feet walkin, but just can't anymore. Our garden is waiting, but both troy-bilt tillers bit the dust and don't know if we can locate parts, as they went out of business! Don't know if I can garden or not this year b/c of knee problems, but I will do what I can. Maybe I'll just enjoy everyone else's garden pictures this year. Yours are certainly nice!
Oh, and the temperature thing? Been there, done that, and glad I am through it!!.
Have a wonderful week and keep right on smilin, so people will wonder what you're up to!

You have a beautiful property; it's so nice and FLAT! ;) Ours is mostly on a hill and it's getting harder to maneuver. Take care of yourself, GF! I know you love your MIL, but you're no good to her or anyone else if anything happens to you!
Hugs,
Sher

I don't know where you are, so I'm not sure what grows in your area. Definitely plant perennials or annuals that reseed, it's so much easier and more economical than planting lots of annuals every year.

Vickie, your garden is looking soooo good! All of your plants and beds are. If this is what you come up with while you are tired, the rest of us might as well give it up! LOL! I think you may be the energizer bunny!

Your farmland and flower beds looks so pretty.....I love the rock edging! Everything looks so inviting.....

My plumbago froze to the ground, and is just beginning to have tiny sprouts. Maybe there's hope for yours.

I wear shoes to church and to the store, but I'm with you ....barefoot is my daily foot attire. Watch for snakes on those barefeet though.

I admire your restraint about waiting to move to the farm -I'd be busting at the seams to get out there full time! Such a pretty place and enough acreage to really do something with. We toyed with the idea of buying some of these guys

reality reminded us - not wise to start new endeavors while battling for DH's health - but oh my would be interesting.
Glad you shared the pictures - I know you are working hard between job, home and MIL - bless you - stars are being added to your crown sweet friend!

I truly enjoyed the tour of your place. I am so jealous of all the flowers and garden. Mine is still in the planning stage. It is still to cold to have them out. I will be getting to it soon.
I popped over via Fraker farms.
I also will become a follower to my new found friend.

Holy cow. Here I am catching up on some reading. Enjoying the garden. Reading your words. And THEN. I see a dead, upside down critter. I am totally cracking up at the gopher count. Hope they are all gone! ~Mindy

And might I steal/borrow/use a couple of the buttons you have? The no obligation and the award free buttons are appealing to me! ~Mindy

You are a busy little bee. Isn't it fun to dig up and rearranging? I love it. Your photos of the farm are beautiful, with the sun streaming in. I hope to start my vegetable garden this weekend. And no, no progress on the rusty items. I've been too busy digging up flowers and rearranging myself. I think I'm getting back into the blogging groove little by little.

Hope to talk to you again soon.

Hi Vicki! Love the beautiful photos and yes, the early part of the morning is wonderful! Your garden looks just fantastic! Hope it all produces well. Have you gotten any rain I sent your way yet?? LOL. We got 5 inches in one afternoon and then it rained again last night. So I am trying to send some your way! Everyone here is getting stuck in the mud. lol. blessings,Kathleen

Chickie, I found some rabbit spray to keep the critters from eating my bushes and herbs. Those little things are cute, but they can sure eat up a garden and flower beds.
Loved the pictures! Rick was impressed with your garden, being a gardner himself. I made him look at it. :)

Hello my friend, love the garden shots, the rabbit to. I understand about the feet thing, the water will cool you down when they are sprayed. I also have black heels, cause of the dirt getting into the cracks. XO MARY
