Goin's On

Life's been fun around here on Sand Flat Farm.  My Nashville son left to go back this morning. Always sad to see them go, but I can't keep him here.  We had a great 10 days while he was home.  Of course, the house is a disaster - not because of him, but I tend to let everything just go by the wayside so I can spend time with the family. Plus I was injured - more to follow.  Josh and his lovely wife came over and spent lots of time, too.  And my folks.  We just partied all week long!  It was great!

My guys, all of them including the girl kid when she's here, have to go shooting while they're here. Even me!  It's fun, and we compete to see who's the best.  Stupid me didn't move her thumb out of the way when I pulled the trigger and the hammer got me - took a hunk 'o hide off my thumb.  I took a picture of my bloody stump and told everyone I shot my thumb by accident.  They half-way believed me. I was so brave - I didn't even cry.  It was pretty gross, but no worries. I only had to get 2 pints of blood. (JK) The thumb was saved to pull that hammer back another day...

I'm so glad I'm not a chimpanzee - it's been really hard not having an opposable thumb to work with, do dishes, fold laundry, cook, pull up my jeans, wash my hair this week, etc. ...  ;)

Protective ear-gear is a must. I think it's a new fashion statement.  Here they are "plinkin'" with .22's.

Adam is a bachelor still  >:-/   and so he doesn't get to eat home-cooked food much.  He eats out alot on the road traveling, so when he comes to Texas, his big request is momma's chicken fried steak, real mashed taters, green beans, and lots of thick cream gravy.  He looks extrememly happy doesn't he?  He filled his plate 2-3 times at least.  Makes a momma feel good to make her kid happy!

We've got hawg problems here in Texas, heck, they're overtaking just about everywhere I guess.  Dad's got a few hawg traps set up with feeders here.  They tear up everything and breed like rabbits.  They can ruin a good pasture of crops or hay in a few short hours.

These are baited with corn here... Dad checks 'em every day or two and he's got game cameras set up around them, too, so we can see what kind of activity is going on.  There're always 'coons and possums and other varmints, and of course deer.  But with a game camera one can see what you're up against when trapping hawgs and what times they come and how many, etc.  Helps when planning their demise.

And, with the scattered rains we've been so blessed with the last couple of weeks, the gopher situation has been on high alert.  We've gotten 9 NINE, people, during the month of October, and probably could've gotten a few more with a little more diligence.  We were busy with family stuff.  Gopher huntin' took a backseat while we were kickin' up our heels.  However, for your enjoyment, I have saved a picture of my last hunt.  Three in one morning. I think that's my new best record.  Don't worry - there's no blood.  Laid 'em out here so you can get a reallllll good look.

They thought this photo below showed their best sides...  Look at those claws.  They can really do some excavating, let me tell you!  I guess this is not very dignified to make fun of them in their present state, but oh well... I promise you they had no idea they were being set up for ridicule.  At this point, they didn't care if syrup went to a dollar a sop.

Early in the wee hours of last Wednesday morning, the motion detector light went on out in the front of the house.  It doesn't come on very often, but I saw it and got up and looked out the front window. I didn't see anything, and I'm not sure, but I think I heard a car.  Guess what I found when I opened the front door later that morning?????

THIS!

He's probably 3-4 months old.  Not very big yet.  He's not yellow - he's tan colored with big orange eyes.  Tony says his eyes look evil cuz they have a red cast to them.  I wonder if they'll eventually turn yellow?  He was a drop-off by some kind sweet soul, I'm sure. I think that's how we got our other cats, too. I guess that's what the motion detector light came on for.  Either that person dropping him off or the kitty himself.  Usually something that small doesn't trigger it, but ... whatever...

This is the 4th FOURTH cat that has been dropped here.  He's very sweet, but I'm not spending another arm and leg on a cat.  He is welcome to stay around, but with the coyotes, I don't know how long he'll last.  It's sad, really, and I don't wanna get attached to him.  I haven't even named him yet.  Josh told me to name him "Gepetto" but I think that's too long. We'll see how long he lasts and if he's coyote-savvy, then I'll contemplate neutering/shots, etc.  I love cats, but I'm allergic so he can't come in the house.

Well, I'm outa here, people.  Y'all try to have a wonderful day and keep yo dress down, ya heah?

Good heavens! Reading one of your posts a gal needs to hold onto her hat and the reins, too. Sooo much happening down there on the farm. Guess you could say that those varmints died with their eyes wide open. Ohhhh...*quiver*

Adam's plate of food does look delish. Glad that you got him back up to speed in that ten days so he can head back to Nashville well fed.

We do lots of shootin' around here too. Gophers=icky and hawgs=gross. But, that plate of food looks might fine.

I hope your thumb feels better soon. Its nice to see your son making his momma happy and eating lots of home cooked food. I really hope this kitty is coyote savvy and he/she stays around to help with the varmit control.

Hi Vickie!

So fun to catch up on all of your news! I love to go shooting too - so sorry about your thumb... :0( Hope you heal up quickly!

Now, that Adam is adorable - I can't believe he is still single - although, my son was 31 when he finally got married! When he finally finds the right gal, he can serenade her every day! A nice hot meal made with love my his mama . . . how wonderful!

Those dead critters are really ugly! I'm so glad we don't have to worry about them - or hogs, yuck!

Cute kitten - so sad that someone didn't want him. But, if he can keep from being coyote bait, he will make a good pet, and maybe keep some of those ugly critters away from your yard!

Hugs,
Barb

What an exciting life farm girl...you are adjusting just great to this new endeavor, farm life, empty-nest, new mother-in-law...even if you have had your hands in some of it for years! Love the plate of chicken fried steak...nothing says Texas like chicken fried steak.

Those "things" are just plain ugly...oh my, I might have second thoughts about having a farm...as for the cats, well my grandparents seem to always have new ones around when we came to visit.

Glad life is full for you...what a blessing.

Good updating post - we've kept our barn cat for going on 12 years - although we've lost goats to predators - the cat gets shut in our barn/workshop every night and let out in the morning - seems to be good protection for him and keeps the varmints out of barn!DH just said your gophers are in breedin' season so your numbers are inflated - no fair catching'em when they are stupefied by hormones (of course my husband says I like it when he pokes me in the ribs so we all know how accurate his pronouncements can be!)

Oh Vickie..... your 'boys' are so good looking!!! The chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes look mighty good too!!!

Yea, for the 'catch' of the gophers..... I'm glad you posted pictures, I wasn't sure what they looked like....looks like a short tailed rat to me... YUUKKKKK!

Cute kitty..... I hope he/she last long than the last ones. Cats in our area are disappearing too..... the fox and coyotes are hungry too.

I love your Gate 11 post!!!
Love,

Oh Vickie! Looks like you had a wonderfully busy weekend with the kiddos! We were doing the same thing over here at my house for my daughter's 24th birthday. I'm sorry to hear about your thumb, but I'm glad it's still ATTACHED!! Yikes! And your dinner looked to-die-for...I'm ready to make reservations! It's easy to see why he could put down more than 1 serving. And the little critters look pretty creepy...not gonna lie, they look spooky. You are on a roll! I wonder if we have those on our land in The Big Thicket area? I'm sure we do.

Anyway, this past week has gone by so fast. I did the same thing you did...just let the house go. Today, I spent hours cleaning and trying to catch up. We get a house full of people and with everyone else's dogs, we had FIVE dogs in the house and only one of those is small, the rest are large at at least 50 pounds a piece. I had dog hair everywhere. My floors had to be swept, bleached and polished today. We really are trying to get ready to sell this house. I can't wait.

Anyway, I'm happy you had such a nice visit, but I'm sure you feel like I do...it's time to recuperate this week!!!!!!!!!!:-)

WOW, being a farm gal in Texas certainly is not dull. I don't know If I could live with all those critters running around. I can't understand people who have pets and then, for whatever reason, they just dump them. Poor little kitty, do you have an animal shelter in your area where he could be placed for adoption? I have always wondered what chicken fried steak and white gravy looked like, remember I'm from Maine, no white gravy in these parts. LOL Blessings, Julie.

I loved seein the hawg trap. And you did good on your gopher hunt. lol What tears up jack here is the armadillos. They can mess up our yard in a hurry.
