Back At The Farm...

Hey there!  Just stopping by to say hi!  All's well on Sand Flat Farm...

Chicken update.  I have 9 hens.  Twice this week I have gotten 9 eggs in a day.  Is that amazing or what!  I would think that it would not happen often that all of one's chickens laid an egg on the same day.  Different chickens breeds lay at different rates.  I doubt that ANY chicken lays every single day.  You who've had chickens longer can tell me if that's true or not. (I'm sure I will be corrected if I'm wrong! :- )))))

Just LOOK!
Have you EVER seen any eggs more beautiful???  I know I'm silly - the chicken-thing is still new and I still love going out to collect the day's eggs.  Of course, Tony and I can't eat this many eggs.  We give some to son and his wife, her parents, my parents, and eat quite a few ourselves, and sometimes have a dozen or two left to give to friends.  Thanks for indulging me...

Gypsy says hi!  She's got her a big ole hole dug around at the back of the house.  It had gotten so hot, so I would run water in the hole to cool the dirt.  Gypsy LOVES to lay in her hole!

The hay's all in. I don't know if they'll get another cutting or not - depends on the weather perhaps.  Hay was much better this year.  Still could have been better, but we got some late rains that helped the ranchers and farmers out some.

I love to watch the raking.  You know, these ranchers and guys that actually take care of the hay have hundreds of thousands of dollars invested in their equipment.  You should see some of the machinery that our hay guy brings over to our place!  It's amazing!

Well, girls - gotta run - work tomorrow.  Painting later this week! YEA!  I need to put up some of my little paintings I've been doing over at my South Light Art Blog  click my button on my side bar if you're interested!   I also added a link to my website where you can view more paintings of mine.  Take care - see you soon!  Keep yer dress down!

Your getting so many eggs because the snake is gone. LOL. I give my dogs chopped hard boiled eggs with their kibble.

I love checking in at Sand Flat Farm. Your eggs look like the eggs I have begun collecting from my new flock of laying hens.

Haying is almost magical ( as is collecting eggs) and to see how much goes into a hay harvest to feed livestock makes me appreciate it all the more . MY sheep have no idea or care about this though, they just want their hay, NOW !

I am going to check out your art blog now.

Pretty soon your hens egg production will decrease with the length of days shortening. You can extend it if you want by putting a light in their coop. We found this out when we added a heating light in the middle of a hard winter and all of a sudden they were laying again. :-)

Wow, it seems your hens are laying pretty quickly but that's probably because I'm not there every day taking care of them. It's so nice to have fresh eggs and they're so pretty. Beau likes digging and laying in a hole too, in my flower bed! But I put the squash on that by filling it and mulching deep. Guess he doesn't like digging in mulch. I love the smell of hay cutting. That's about as close as I'll ever get! :D You are a gifted artist! Love you photos of barns and bluebonnets.
Hugs, Debbie

They are happy hens. That's obvious. What beautiful eggs! Are you doing the Bubba thing with eggs instead of shrimp? It's a fun problem and oh to be in line for fresh eggs. What a blessing!

Off to see what you've been up to in the studio...

Yes...give Gypsy some eggs!! I love that she has a hole to lay in. And I wish I lived close enough to be an egg recipient!

I am about to start over with my little flock - fancy chickens are NOT laying very big eggs nor will they lay IN nest boxes (preferring everywhere else including bare ground with plenty'poop!)
have some americaunas on order - our golden comets (a sex linked good all around chicken) were dependable year around layers here in Texas - you are getting about the average - this time of year is best production I think - but they DO look gorgeous and people just LOVE getting farm eggs - not at all like the joke about running from the gardener with "just a few more zucchini"! Haying is wonderful - love visiting Sand Flat Farm with you

I've been missing you, Vickie! Thought we were going to have to send the search party after ya... :)
It's not unusual to get an egg a day from young hens, but as they get older their egg production will slow down a little. My 4 hens are two years old now and each hen skips the third or fourth day, so I'm getting about 2-3 eggs a day.
I love watching hay being put up... but it sure is hard work, especially in the heat! I'm kinda glad we bought ours this year... last summer we just about worked our whole summer away in the field!

Vickie - Those are indeed beautiful eggs! I am with you on loving the entire experience with having chickens. I've now had my chickens for 1 1/2 years and even though I'm still a newbie chicken owner, I love, love, love my hens and having fresh eggs! As for the egg laying count, my hens, for the first year, the five hens would consistently lay five eggs per day. Now, I am seeing that very cold or hot days will impact their laying cycle. I guess that is why it is imperative to replenish the chicken stock every year or so with a couple of new birds. Enjoy those eggs! We have an AMAZING quiche recipe that should just be called, Ham, Egg and Cheese pie!! It is better than any I've ever had ANYWHERE. I need to post it. Love Gypsy as well, she is gorgeous! So glad you are sharing your art work, I might be able to one day get a piece to hang in my cabin, after I get moved! So exciting!

I agree....those eggs are pretty! I have told your snake story to several people....several ladies today at homeschool group! Like someone said, it might be because your snake is gone. Maybe those golf balls tricked them into laying! :)

Back during my younger years, I truly loved hauling hay, building fence and cutting firewood. Where did all of that energy go?
