That old fence you see in this picture is coming down soon. We are having pipe fences put up instead. I kinda like that "old timey" fence - looks real "farmy". But we're moving it out about 10 feet on that side of the house to enlarge the front yard and to give us more garden room. I still will probably have to put up some kinda wire fence, too, to keep the critters out. I'm still dealing with moles, however. They like to pull things down from underneath the garden! My dad says we have to share a little with the critters. Well, my garden is not big enough to share! I found 8 different runs yesterday weeding. We've put out traps but so far, they've eluded them and managed to spring 'em without getting caught. Another trait of sandy soil - moles...
This year I planted onions, yukon gold potatoes, some little red potatoes, purple hull peas, cucumbers, yellow & zucchini squash, a few okra just to see if they would flourish in my sandy soil, different kinds of peppers, eggplant, corn, green beans, corn, and a few broccoli (probably got em in the ground too late this year). I really didn't get to enjoy my garden much last year because of being so sick, but am really having fun with it this year.
One of our dear friends, Jay, brought Tony an oak tree to plant in honor of his dad who passed away 3 weeks ago. Some of Tony's office folks brought us a Japanese Red Maple. They wanted to give us something that would last. Tony's dad left us the farm. I really thought that was especially thoughtful to receive these trees. I'm going to have a couple of plaques made for both trees.
We're moving Princess home from college this weekend. I really dread it - the moving part - not having her back home. Her "stuff" has grown and maybe doubled since she left in August last year. We're renting a UHaul truck with her roommate's family and are going to get it all at once and bring it home. Plus we have to clean her apartment real good. Saturday's going to be a long day...
Help - I'm covered with chigger bites! Working at the farm my legs and a couple of places on my arms have unbearably itchy chigger bites that are driving me crazy. I've been using Camphophenique, but it's not helping much. I went to the CVS and they don't carry Chigger-rid anymore. I wonder if Walmart does... I couldn't hardly sleep last night for scratching! I'm using insect repellant while out there, but probably should have re-applied it. Think I'll run to Walmart at lunch...
Well, I guess that's all for now. Have to scratch my chigger bites...*$*#(&@#$(*&@$^@$#

Saw your comment on my blog. Thought I would come on over! I love the picture of the little shack on the right-upper side of your blog. I have always had a fetish for old abandoned homes. I always wonder about the story behind them. Like, who lived there. What babies were born there, etc. I see that you are an artist. What kind of work do you do? We used to live in DeRidder, Louisiana, which is about 15 minutes from East Texas. My daughter is headed to live in Texas. She left 5 minutes ago. She took her last final, & is going to stay with her sister in Fate, Texas, for the summer! Glad to meet your aquaintance!

Your garden looks great! I had to laugh at your chigger reference. I went blackberry pickin' in NC a couple summers ago and got a horrible case of the chiggers that pretty much took away my desire for blackberries. I didn't realize chiggers were so prolific!
My dad was born in Clarksville and my mom in Mt Pleasant. Guess you're not too far from there. I hope to get back down there in the near future. I still love Texas.
And..I love the old fence!
Have a great day!
Say, how much corn are you planting anyway? I don't blame you for not wanting to share any with the critters. Can't you get Adam home to shoot'em? The Princess's stuff has doubled since she left? Has she got the flea market thing down pat, too? No, it must be all her college books.
You have wonderful, thoughtful friends to present your hubby with those trees in remembrance. Very lovely gesture indeed.
Take care...
Your garden is coming along nicely. Due to our back yard projects, I haven't planted a thing...yet. I'm an eternal optomist that I still have time. Congrats to your son on his anticipated graduation. I know what you mean about the instant raise that you got. My raise starts this June as my daughter is taking the 4 1/2 year plan (her choice) and I told her I would pay for 4 years. I hope I make good use of it. Your husband has thoughtful friends and coworkers that gave him the trees in memory of his father. It is such a wonderful thought. Take it easy as things will ease up soon.
My goodness, you've been busy. Your garden looks like it doesn't have a weed one in it. As for the moles, go to www.lehmans.com and get a molechaser..they're neat. Don't forget to bring along your friend Patience with you to College Station..it's graduation time and it's going to be a zoo.
I love the tree planted in your FIL's remembrance. It'll be nice for you to see new life and memories being made around and under it.
Blessings
The Garden looks great. I hate chiggers. I have no advise to offer, but you have my sympathy. I used to paint the bites with clear nail polish. that seemed to help a bit with the itching. Some of those bites can last a looong time. Try an aveno bath soak too.

I love the garden and farm. I want to live on a farm again.i guess just not my time.
Oh boy, fun times for you and yours! The garden looks great and seems to hold the promise of a bountiful harvest! And when you figure out how to get rid of the mole menace will you please give us the secret? The moles are winning big time around here.
You get your princess back for the summer, yay! Like I said, fun times for you and yours!
P.S. Calamine lotion for the chigger bites?
The garden looks great. Love the donkeys!!!
I'm so glad you dropped in for a visit! It sounds like your garden is coming along nicely. I love fresh produce, just not the whole growing weeding part of it, that's why I support the local growers and buy fresh from them.
There is a spray that we put out every season that gets rid of chiggers, I'll have to ask my husband about it. Girl, we do not go through a summer around here without Chigger-aid. Get yourself to Wal-Mart quick! Why do such pests even exists?
Happy haulin' this weekend!
Oh my goodness! Chigger bites are horrible! I've not really found anything that works great. Your garden looks great. One of these years (LOL!) I should plant a garden.
Just love the way your garden is growing. By the way, for chigger bites, rub kerosine..that's right...on each bite. They will be gone by the next morning. My grandparents used to do this, the smell is bad I know, but the relief is worth it. Blessings,Kathleen
Your garden is so beautiful. I wish you a very special weekend...m.
Hi! Nice to meet you.Glad you liked the Bluebells and thanks for visiting and commenting.
Have just browsed through a lot of your blog and see you have had some quite difficult and also busy times recently. Interesting to read of other people's loves.
You certainly have lots to do in your garden and seem to be growing a lot.
Like thekitchen transformation in the farmhouse.
Blessings.
Hope your Saturday went well, just now reading this post Saturday night. What sweet pictures of the momma and her babe! What a blessing those trees will be.
Hey Girl! I guess I never whacked the seed. For me it was just scooping it out. It definetely does not make you macho! I think Honey's muscles, just glistened in the sun, while he wacked the seed.

Your garden looks great! I think I planted mine a little late. I do have the corn and squash coming up, but my tomates are still tiny. I had forgotten all about chiggers. Hope you find something to relieve the itch.
The donkey pics are cute.
Hugs :)

Hi!! Your garden looks amazing!! :) I just wanted to let you know you won a copy of Second Nature over at my blog. Email me at farm_mom74@yahoo.com with your address when you get a chance and I'll send it out to you. :)
The garden looks great!!
Sorry about the chigger bites.... when I was little, my mom used to put clear nail polish on mine. No matter what the remedy, they are so horrible!
Thanks for coming by and leaving a comment. Looks like you're pretty busy with your kids and garden and activities. What a fun project, restoring your family home. I'll be back when I have a few minutes. Mimi
Your garden is gorgeous!
My aunt used to send a bar of good old lye soap home with me for chigger bites. Worked like a charm. Wet the soap a tad, apply it directly to the skin, no more itch and the bites dried up.
I am glad you like the soap and lotion products. Just being honest when I say, I do not use anything else! Thank you for the comments on the blog.
