This past weekend, my sister came to the farm to help me make jelly and pickles. We've got plums running out our ears around here from my daddy's tree. We had two big ole 5 gallon buckets and another bucket full on Saturday. I'd already put up a slew of jelly already, but we can't let this go to waste. There's also another bucketload of ripe plums still on the tree and a bunch on the ground! We've been givin' 'em away!
We cooked plums down nearly all day long, and also made jelly while we waited. My seester is my bestest friend in the whole wide world. We're both country girls 'n we figger we can do just about anything alone or together that a man can do -'cept pee standin' up! And we could probly do that, too, just might not be able to hit what we're aimin' for! Why wait on your husband to do somethin' for ya when you can probly do it yourself, and you don't hafta wait! Together me 'n her have gotten into some fine messes, but always got ourselves out of 'em. We can fix stuff, build stuff, we can fish and hunt, and clean a deer & fish, we can re-wire a dryer from gas to electric (actually seester did most of that), you name it, we've probly done it. We hung around with our do-it-all dad all the time. He is still the bee's knees to us!
OK, back to jelly.
Here are the plums cookin' down. It smells heavenly to breathe in all that lusciousness!
Here's me in my farmhouse kitchen warshin' more plums for the jelly...
Sis is dipping up juice to run through the strainer. We put the whole plums in the pot, and the skins and seeds come out in the strainer and we're left with just juice!
We're havin' a laugh over somethin'. We laughed all day long. AND we never could figger out who took our picture together. Was it Mom? She was there for awhile, or was it my daughter? She was there for awhile, too! Not the most flattering of photos, but good memories nonetheless! And voila! The final product!!! I sent half home with her for her family and some to mom and dad. It was so good! Now with some homemade bread and real butter, I'll be in hog's heaven! We still have almost a whole 'nuther bucket of plums, ripening and fermenting. I hope I can git 'em done before they rot!
Alice the farm kitten is doing so well. She is growing right before our eyes. She's getting less skittish and runs out to the car when we get to the farm. Loud noises still make her nervous and sometimes she'll take off and run under the porch. But she's getting better. She's finally started purring whenever you pick her up and scratch her. It's been awhile since I've had a cat. I've had cats all my life and it's nice to have another one. I still think I'm gonna git her a buddy.
Is this not the cutest kitten you've ever seen? She always has dirt in her nose from playing under the porch all the time. She seems very healthy and playful and she's eating like a little pig. I'll have to get her to the vet for a check up soon. Take care, people! Have a great week! And keep your dress down!

I just about grinned my face off reading that first bit...I can just see you and seestar talking it up in the kitchen like only seestars can! LOL Ok...I love plum jam..made it for years and everything else..just looking at all those washed bottles and lids makes me cringe...I guess I got burned out doing so much of it...but it is so good, nothing better. I made pancakes tonight and me and hubby finished off a whole (small) bottle of strawberry freezer jam along with them..YUM! Thanks for sharing...not many women do such things anymore...to busy out in the work force world! Come say hi :D
Oh Vikki, I loved reading this! Making jam and jelly with your sister looks like so much fun. Boy, our fruit trees are barely out of blooms and yours are ripe and ready to burst!
You wrote the word "warshin" the way I pronounced it most of my early life until someone told me there was no "r" in it. I can still easily revert back to that pronunciation and If I hung around you I think I would.
Your kitten is just beautiful and a buddy would be nice for her and you.
Hope you got your homemade bread and real butter to spread your lovely and yummy plum jam on.
Looks like you and sis had such a great time together. What a blessing you have such a good relationship with your sis. Kitty looks like it has grown since first pics. Adorable!
Kitten is a cutie pie. Love all you pics of you and sis. I too am best friends with my sister and like you two we are very independent.
I too have been making lots of jellies and jams.
Love your kitchen!
Your sister talk reminds me of Mom and myself. I don't have a sister but Mom and I get into projects and mischief that makes my poor husband cringe. So many times Chelsea has had to ride home on the floor of the car or the van under some huge piece of furniture because we just had to get it...right now.
Anyway...Alice is a sweetie! What great pictures you took of her.

That is one producing plum tree! Those plums look really good, too.
It's just all so Texas'y and it reminds me of home and brings back good memories. I'm so glad you have a sister to be your best friend!

Hey Vickie, just got back online. I used to get plums from my mom and dad's trees in PA years ago(Santa Rosa plums) and they make the absolute BEST jam! Oh I miss it! Maybe if you have a contest for somethin' and I win, the prize could be some of your luscious jam!! You go girl... you're doing a great job! PS I'll be posting my newest painting in a day or so... stop by and take a look.
Looks like you and your seestar had a wonderful time while working. Jelly looks great!

Vicki, You're new Alice is darling! What character... you can see it in her eyes! She's definitely a keeper! Glad she found her way to you. I can't imagine life without animals. There's just something about petting and loving on them that makes all the stress go away. Someone recently reminded me though that there's a reason God made them so cute when they're young... because they are a heap of work! How quickly I forget!
You and your sis remind me of me and my sis! She is also my best friend, and boy do we get ourselves into some messes!! Don't you just love making memories? The plums look sooo good, we won't have plums here until about August, maybe later this year.
Alice really is adorable - furry friends are also great, I sure do love mine.
Have a great day, hope you made bread to spread that purple goodness on!
Hugs,
Barb
Get a load of you and your sis!!! See, I have the same "I can do it" attitude that you do and I can get into some fixes all by myself.
That plum jelly looks great. You should forget about Christmas shopping and give that instead!
Oh, yes, do get Alice a companion; just make sure they both get "fixed"! If I lived closer, I'd be standing in line for some of those plums, they look yummy.
Plum jellies and jams and conserves are the best, especially when you have the "right" kind of plums. (Ours turned out to be "prunes".)
Even hard work is fun when you have someone to share getting it done. :)
Alice is so cute. I just want to cuddle her.
Must be nice to have a sister-best-friend. I never had the honor or privilege. :-)
Awwww, little 'Alice' is sooooooo cute! ,-)
What a wonderful blessing to have such a great relationship with your sister! Love ya'll's git-er-done attitude! I'm of the same vein. ;) Your jelly sounds delicious! Enjoy a bite for us!
How much fun and I so remember the days as a child when we would do plum jelly....those plums just brought back so many memories.
Fun, fun,
Janette
It sure does look like you were having a wonderful time with your sister.
I have been making strawberry jam again this year. We are getting so many this year it is hard to keep up.
have a great day.
Oh I loved this...from plums to sisters to kittens. Oh don't we all need a giggle day from time to time? I need one, too. Can I come down and make some plum jam with you? :D
I so enjoyed this post! Reminds me of the plum jelly my mom made from the fruit of our neighbor's tree! Miss Betty didn't care to make jelly, so my mom made it and shared! It was just a little tart -so tasty--and I remember she used Sure Jel---I'm tellin you those plums look like the same variety! Brings back memories and I think I'm going to plant me a plum tree! Do you happen to know what variety it is --perhaps it's a wild plum! I do know that my mom dug up shoots from their tree and planted it in our yard and it grew to be quite big. Unfortunately, both trees lasted just a few years!
And that precious kitty--she's absolutely gorgeous and that last photo of her is a real killer! Yes, she needs a buddy for sure!
Thanks for your sweet comment--just to let you know when I wrote the post I told "C"--it's too long-I'm going to divide it into two posts! Part 2 is already mostly written and it's about chasing lightning bugs and the watermelon stand!
Oh I love canning! Looks like a fun-filled time!
Your kitchen rocks!
~Miss A
Chickie, we got the same trees! Yep! I haven't checked on you this week - Brin came in on Tuesday and Sam came in yesterday (Wed), and my car's AC compressor went out, and we've been busy ever since! Loved the jelly making post! I know you and the sister had fun, just like Brin and I did! Love the kitchen and the open shelving. Very old fashioned. but I don't see a dishwasher ?!?...
I need to call Tara and get a trip going down that way! Want to see the farm house!
