Cats, Christmas and Tractor Girl

Guess what I did Saturday afternoon?  You'll never guess.  It won't be that exciting to you, but I had fun.  We had cleared some big piles of old rusted hay rings, old fencing and aluminum gates, etc., hauled all that off to the bulk metal place and gotten our little pile of money.  Then what was left was a jagged, holey and hilly landscape behind the barn - not huge, but unsightly and you couldn't drive on it easily.  So, hubby was manning the burning pile, and me?  Well, ME was manning the tractor and doing some leveling.  Moving dirt from here to there - there's a trick to handling the bucket and I think I've got it!  It's sorta fun!

None of my friends know how to run a tractor and bucket and brush hog and box blade but I do. I'm sure alot of you people do, too, especially those of you that have a farm or ranch. Imagine this - It was 65 degrees and the wind was blowing. The husband was cleaning up and piling up stuff for the burning pile (and there was alot of stuff), loading metal onto the big trailer, and here I am in my capris and flip-flops and a cap driving the tractor around dragging the bucket across big mounds of dirt to level it, picking up big loads of dirt and dropping it in the gulleys. Husband said I did a good job. Sorry I don't have a picture.

Guess I'm a farm girl now - cuz I can man the tractor  AND  I can operate that tractor in capris and flip-flops! Now how's that!  Actually, I think probably some of my friends and family think I've absolutely lost my mind, but that's okay - I'm doing exactly what I've wanted to do since I was a small kid. I'm still plotting when I'm gonna get my chickens.  I'm determined to have chickens in the spring. I'm gonna get my dad and me and him are going to get my coop built. I think I've about worn the husband down into letting me get some.

Went to the Farm/Ranch/Feed store Saturday, too, to pick up some more gopher traps. It was customer appreciation day, and Joe Bob had cooked two huge cauldrons of beef stew! Hot and mild - with big man-sized chunks of beef and vegetables, and a good seasoned broth with jalapenos and a touch of chili pepper.  MMMMMAAAAAANNNNN!  I think Joe Bob makes the best stew I've ever eaten!  I ate two bowls full! With crackers and cookies and soft drinks!  I love customer appreciation day at the Feed Store! And Joe Bob's stew!

Wanna see sumpin' purdy?
My roses are popping! They look great right now.  Thought you folks in the blizzard zone might like to see some flowers right about now...  It's just now starting to get cold. We've had only a couple of freezing nights or just below and the flowers are still thriving.  Here's another...

The window box is full of petunias.  The flower beds could use some attention, and the yard actually needs mowing one more time before real winter sets in.  Cain't even see the edge of the bed right now! The dadgum clover junk starts growing when it gets cool and tries to take over.  Gotta squash that quick!

I've done a good raking once already, but will have to do it again. The catawba trees are dropping their foot long bean pods and they ARE messy.  And they'll keep adroppin' 'em til spring.

Not much Christmasing going on yet.  We are having some renovations done at our house and so it puts a damper on trying to decorate - we're getting a new roof and gutters due to hail damage.  We had the outside painted, and next is the inside... May be putting the tree up on Christmas eve!!!

New topic - I'm looking for a new home for my kitty, Alice.  I've tried every way I can think of to keep her. She's having to stay in the house all the time now due to Jasper.  He beats her up if she steps one little toe out of the door.  He's been neutered, and Alice spayed, but we think he's just being territorial and agressive towards her.  He beats her up and he's so mean to her.  Otherwise, he is the sweetest and nicest cat you'd ever meet.  The other reason is that my allergies to Alice are making me sick.  I thought I was gonna have two nice outside cats, but I can't let her out or...

THIS is where she stays!  Up on the roof!  And in this weather, I just can't let her up there.  Jasper can't follow her up the big oak tree - he's too heavy, but he CAN get on the roof and chase her.  I'm scared she's gonna fall off.  AND she's not being a mouser/gopherer.  Jasper catches mice and gophers all the time! He's such a great farm cat - and HE is what I was looking for.  He eats his kills - all except the heads - he leaves them around for us to find them.  Ugh.  I've contacted family and friends and hopefully I'll be able to find a good home for Alice.

Hope your holiday busy-ness is fun and Christmasy and cozy! I appreciate you all more than you know!

Vickie, you remind me of me! Driving and operating a tractor was all that I did at age 14, loved it too. I am shocked that you don't have chickens...a woman that can operate a tractor like that doesn't need permission to have herself some chicks! LOL That meal sound wonderful and fun to share such company too. Love your flowers..I cannot believe you are in flip-flops and have flowers still!!! And poor sweet Alice, and yes cats are so territorial..naughty little things! Hope you can find a real nice home/lap for her soon! Have a great week and come say hi ;D

I am impressed, big time! Too bad you can't come on over and help me get some big, big piles of manure moved from one area to the next, but you would probably get stuck in the mud if you did.

Your roses are beautiful. We here in the snow, sleet, rain and mud zone do appreciate flowers blooming, even if they aren't blooming around here.

Wish Alice could come live here...she and Miss Marple would probably get along fine, but the trip is a long one.

Absolutely love your photographs. A great feeling being a farm girl - I don't drive the tractor but I would help out if it was needed. Somehow, getting down and dirty behind that wheel is just so appealing!

Oh Vickie...... driving that tractor sounds like fun to me. I've never driven a tractor, but I sure did love driving our big riding mower when we lived in the country....it was very relaxing to me.

Your roses and petunias look so beautiful! I have a weakness for window boxes..... I LOVE THE LOOK!!!!

I hope you can find a good home for sweet Alice. When one cat doesn't like another cat, they can be so mean and relentless in their behavior. Good luck!

My family thinks I'm nuts too! It's ok, we newby middle-aged farm girls will stick together. And now, let's talk chickens! You simply must get some Ameraucanas. They are so sweet and gentle and lay the most beautiful green and blue eggs. They are like little gifts left in the pine shavings everyday. I got 21 chicks by mail this spring. I'm down to 18 and they are laying 10 to 13 eggs a day even though it has gotten cold here. I would not recommend a rooster! They are wonderful in theory. The crowing adds character to the farm but not at 3:00 in the morning and he attacks us sometimes. The girls would lay with or without him. Hubby wants him to stay so I guess I will have to refrain from using the hatchet but that doesn't mean I won't still tell him I have one!

Love the pic of the flowers with the metal building. I need that right now as we are covered with snow and temps in the teens.

Poor Alice! She's the one behaving and she's got to go. Now don't that beat all. (I've been watching too much Dr. Phil.)

Sounds busy as can be down there. Any chance of spending Christmas at the farm this year?

If you get a chance, can you check comments on your last post for mine. I truly am curious.

WHAT?????????

NO PICTURE???????

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...

Now to go back and read the rest of the entry.

But first, I am soooooooooo *jealous* of your doing-that-tractor-stuff-ability! Wow, you rock Girl!

Ohhhhhhhhh, poor dear little 'Alice'! Ohhhh sigh. 'Jasper' is just a mean, territorial bully! -pout-

I demand that you remove the name 'Jasper' from him. "Jasper Hale" would never do such things. He was/is a true Southern gentleman and soldier. -sighhhhhhh- Oh yes, 'Jasper' has certainly forfeited his right to such a noble name. So there!

And don't go and say that I need to make up my freakin' mind. -gigggles- I know I said he had to be 'Jasper.' But that was before he displayed the attitude of a bad, bad, bad guy.

Yes, his farm cat stuff is great. And just what you need. And you can't have an indoor cat if it bothers you. I know that.

Oh pooooor Alice!!! Oh please find a gentle home for a sweet kitty. -sighhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh-

I may just have to go and have a weep now. For the sadness of the breakup of 'sweet Alice' and her *turncoat* boyfriend. -pout-

Actually, your bad-guy-cat should now be named 'James.' The first really badddddddddd guy in 'Twilight.'

Yes, I'll go "get a life now." lol!

Awe sugar, I know how you feel about Alice. We had to remove our beloved Topsy and Turvy to our friends house. My son is allergic to them it was so sad.

I think it is cool to learn how to do things all by yourself. A tractor run is on my bucket list. You rock, Missy

You go girl...the change sounds like your destiny...enjoy!!! Sorry about the cat. I have a good farm cat who has to suffer living in the city with us. LOL

You go farm girl! I used to love to bushhog. My Daddy would set me up and here I'd go. There's something about driving big machinery. I know exactly how you felt. So cool!
So sorry to hear that Alice can't stay. I got a coffee today after a MD appt and they had a sign by the register that said "All unattended children will be given an espresso and a free kitty!" So it's somthing to think about. Also, it's Christmas,,,tie a red bow on her and make her a "gift."
LOVE the roses! all is gray here.

What a hoot! I have not learned how to drive the tractor yet but maybe some day I will. I can lift the bucket up and down though. Sounds like you were in hog heaven. Hope you have the best country Christmas ever!

"She thinks my tractor's sexy," might turn into, "he thinks my tractor's sexy," with those capris and flip-flops! LOVE IT! I grew up on a farm, so can well appreciate the feel of a big job well done. There is something very satisfying about moving big piles of earth! LOL! I can't wait to see the chickens in the sping; I need to become a customer of Joe Bob; and those flowers are beautiful! Vickie, I forwarded the e-mail to my hubby about Alice... he's usually very good at finding animals homes, but no luck so far. So sorry. Alice needs a good home. Here's to a productive week on your house so that tree can get up! Merry, Merry!

Glad to hear that you learned to drive the tractor. I being a city girl do not want to learn how to drive hubs.
I will stick with the riding lawn motor.
Hope that you find your sweet kitty a good home. Bad Jasper!!
Have a great day.

Hi Vickie!

Wow, I am impressed! I guess if you have a farm, you better learn and love to be a farmhand! Sounds like fun! I just wish I could be wearing capris and flip flops! Baby, it's cold outside!!

Your flowers are just beautiful - what a nice picture to look at this time of year - thank you for sharing!

Poor little Alice, I wish I lived closer, I would take her in a minute... ;0( I do understand why Jasper should stay, gophers, mice and such on a farm are not a good thing, you really do need a good mouser. I know that you will be able to find Alice a wonderful home - maybe one with kids who will just spoil her rotten!!

Hugs,
Barb
