Saturday, January 23, 2011 - Onion sets out in the garden!!! Tony got out "Boss Hawg" the Tiller, cranked it up and we worked in 10 bags of clippings and leaves, and he turned up that dirt like nobody's business. When we first started that morning, the ground was still hard and a tad frozen, but it warmed up after a bit. Daddy was there, too, and he threw his efforts in and helped me make rows, fertilize, lime and get the onions in the ground. Set out about 500 or so - Yellow Granex, White Granex, and Aggie 1016's.
After Dad & I dug the first row, we put some fertilizer and a peench of lime into the row and worked it in good. Dad says the onions will grow underground while it's cold and they'll reach down for the fertilizer. Cain't argue with that - he always has a good onion crop! In a few weeks, we can start eatin' green onions with our meals! We luv 'em even tho we're all a bit stinky - everybody has to eat some so's we're all "armed"...
Now, see how straight this row is? Daddy was an architect when he was young, and he always is a stickler for detail. His brother, Uncle Bob, always said you could grow more from a crooked row than a straight one. Dad used to give him a hard time about his crooked rows. But he always had a bumper crop, too! So I guess they're both right!
I know they're hard to see, but the onion tops are there. I wound up with 7 rows of onions. Taters will go in next after the ground is not freezin'. Taters are easy and really make you feel like a farmer - they look so pretty while the tops are growing! Can you eat tater greens? Hmmm...
Mr. Jasper is always nearby watching or helping. Today, KATHY at Cedar Pond, I caught my first two gophers for 2011. Jasper pulled one of the traps out of the ground, and ate the gopher off it - all except for the jaw. There was only a piece of hide left on the trap and some gopher teeth. I pulled the second dead one out of another mound, and as soon as I took it off the trap, Jasper grabbed it and started playing with it. He was hoping it would move I guess... He knows what I'm doing when I'm setting traps, and he helps me dig. I have my little hand spade and he sticks his arms way down in the holes and feels around. I've seen him catch one. He does know what he's doing - and he knows what I'm doing, too.
Sorry, people - some of you squeamish folks might not wanna hear about that...
In other news, Saturday p.m., the cute little gingerbread house on the land behind ours burned to the ground. The area volunteer fire departments raced by our place and we went out to see if we could see where they were going. Little did we know that the house behind us was engulfed in flames. There were about 8-9 firetrucks there fighting the blaze for most of the night. They left in the wee hours, but were called back Saturday morning when it broke out again in some hot spots.
No lives were lost - no one was home. A space heater - probably propane - was left burning, and they think that was what sparked the fire. Nice young family lived there on the land. It had been family land for a long, long time. I need to call and check on them and see if there's anything they need...
We took the Mule and rode over there about midnight to see what we could see. You hate to be a voyeur, but you also wanna know what's going on. We stayed in our pasture hoping none of the sparks flew our way...
There's a bit of a shell on the front of the house - you can still see the picket fence...
Such a sweet family... I just think of all the personal items that were lost - the things that cannot be replaced - the pictures, the keepsakes, the hand-me-down treasures --- but they have the most important thing - EACH OTHER!
Thank the Lord for volunteer fire departments! If you have one or more in your area, be sure to support them both physically and monetarily! They are selfless, brave and a dire necessity in small communities! They've saved our hay pastures on our place. Fire would have gotten to our house had they not been around! SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENTS!!!!
OK, there's my soapbox for the day! Have a good one, and as always...
Keep your dress down!
PS - had to git rid of that snow header. I was gettin' blue... From here on out, it's warm colors, warm thoughts and ...
"Blue Skies and Rainbows
and Sunbeams from Heaven,
are what I can see
when the Lord is living in me!"
(Know that song?)

So sorry for the family who lost their house and glad nobody was injured! Those onions you are planting make me want to go and start a vegie garden again! I am busy creating a flowery entrance to our house,so feeling creative!
That is so sad about the little gingerbread home. Your garden brings back childhood memories. There is just nothing like the smell of freshly tilled dirt.
Gotta love Jasper! Such a helper...of course there is something in it for him!
Fire is truly a scary thing. I am so glad no one was home but so sad for the loss of home and things.
About your garden...I LOVE seeing straight rows! A garden mid season that is all neat and straight makes my heart smile.
Wow! 'm impressed with the early start you have on your garden! I don't think potato greens are edible as they are in the nigthshade family.
Sorry for the ones who lost their home. We had a house fire and lost all many years ago. We had 5 children at the time and lost everything. People were so kind and gave us so much stuff, you just can't imagine! Hopefully this will happen with them.
Oh I'm sorry for your neighbors' loss. I hate this for them.
Looks so good to see land being prepared for planting. We won't see that for months to come.
I'm glad that you are setting your winter header aside. Another thing that I'll not be able to do for weeks. I'll visit you for warmth.
NOTICED the new blog look here!!! :-)
Can't believe you are getting going on gardening, in Jan.! Wow!
Oh how horribly sad for that family!!! Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh!
Mr. Jasper is lookin' like the King of the Castle. Did you find a home for sweet Alice??? Or is she still hangin' out, on the roof? -pout-
Hugs and ♥'s...
'Cause Valentine Day is coming!
It's so good to see that someone can plant already. I've been pouring over the seed catalogs as they come in. There is yet hope!
I know you and your neighbors will be able to help this family. How sad to lose those precious things.
Oh hey, good for your cat helping you in the gopher race!!
Gosh so sad about your neighbors! I'm glad no one was home, but to try and replace thier lives...hard.
Spring gardens. I won't be there until the first of April. Sigh.

Hi Vickie!
I can hardly stand to look at the snap dragons - they remind me of sunshine! Something we are lacking! But they are ever so pretty . . . love them!
I am getting excited about getting my garden in too. I love onions and always plant lots, and yes, I love green onions right out of the garden with a little salt, yummmy! Jasper is so cute - what ever happened with Alice? Did you find a good home for her? She was so cute!
Fires are so devastating. We just have to count our blessings, don't we? My father was a fireman, and I remember him being extra careful about toys being on the floor at night. We always had to have a clear and clean path to the door and we knew our escape route! The first fire he ever had to respond to, took the lives of 3 little children and he had to help carry them out . . . he never got over it. My heart goes out to your neighbors.
Fun post today!!
Hugs,
Barb
you are a little ahead of us as far as planting onions and potatoes...got to get ours into the ground this week.....its been very warm here, in the 70s.....
and I can sure relate to the family who lost their home..we had a garage fire last May and it has taken almost a year to get it restored..its almost done now..hope they have good insurance....thank the Lord no one was hurt....
Snap Dragons are one of my very favorite flowers....I can't wait for spring!!!
So sorry about your neighbor's fire..... fires are so awful! Your pictures are really eeerie looking and make me feel 'the fear of fire'.... yes, thanks to all the volunteer fire departments around the country.
So glad to see the flowers on the header photo! The gardening looks great and I am dreaming of working on ours already. So sorry about that fire.
Loved this post, Chickie! The onion garden looks like something Rick would do. B planted onions last weekend, too, and still have two more bunches to get in the ground. I could barely see those onion tops, but I know they are there! Thems'll make some good eatin'! Farm life's great, ain't it! :) Very sorry to hear about your neighbors' misfortune and glad they are safe. You took some good pictures, though. Catch more gophers!
Love the new header. Onions...my friend was planting last week...oh so love watching this, and my Dad is a civil engineer so he would be the same way..sad we don't have a place for him to come out and help, it would be so good for him
Sorry about the fire, how sad...yea for volunteer fire departments....my Dad served on one years ago.
I look forward to watching through your pictures your farm continue to unfold!
Awww.... so sad about the little house burning down, Vickie!! I know it is a blessing no one was hurt or worse, but I can't imagine anything more devastating than losing everything you have in an instant like that... will be praying for that family.
Yay for your garden~ looks like it will be wonderful. I can't wait to start digging in some dirt, too!
WOW! You guys have so much going on I'm surprised you don't have a news crew parked outside your front door! January here ... just started thinking about any work we might need to do this year. So sad about your neighbor's house tho! Glad they weren't hurt.
Hi Vickie! Hope you have a great harvest of onions. So sad to hear about the fire. Have a great week. blessings,Kathleen
Yes Dear One, you answered my questions in my blog. :-)
And I'm happy that Miss Alice has a new home. :-))))
Hugs and ♥'s...
'Cause Valentine Day is coming!
whoa, that's a huge fire! i'm so sorry
for that poor family but happy that
none of the embers wandered to your
place!
i can't believe you're starting your
garden already!
How'd I miss this! I just clicked on your site and saw you had a post I didn't read. Sorry about your neighbor's home. The idea of a fire sure scares me. We live in a house built in 1880's. It's as dry as a bone! I've seen one burn near here and it couldn't be saved.
But thank God no ONE was hurt in it. Getting family and pets out would be my plan! AND my purse. And my guns. And maybe my cosmetic bag and my computer......If I could :D
YUM, onions. We love onions around here too. We won't be planting as much as you did but it is just about time to get the garden tilled and ready. I have spring fever so bad.
I'm so sad for the couple that lost their home. Home fires really scare me for anyone and it's so sad like you said because they've lost valuable momentos and treasures that can't be replaced. Still, their lives are so much more important.
So sad about your neighbor's house, but glad no one was hurt.
I'm so looking forward to gardening weather! This winter has been brutal!
I'm loving Jasper--so did you find a home for Miss Alice?
