I'm just talking about my garden :) It's over and done with for the summer! I'm always sad and always GLAD! So much fun, but so much work. This was a great garden year for us. Alas, my volunteer pumpkins did not make it. Well, they matured and I had some fine specimens, but just too early for fall decorating... they started rotting and then got attacked by squash bugs. Yuck.. oh well...
Tony's tractor made small work of the remains of the garden. Still needs a little care, but all the vines and everything have been piled up to burn after a good rain. Wonder when that'll be? I thought for SURE we'd get in on the tail-end of that storm that went through far northeast Texas yesterday, but it dried up before it got here.
The last of my fresh tomatoes... Boy howdy, I hated to pull up those tomato vines. But it was time. Yes, there were still a very few small 'maters on them, but the heat is in the 100's again, and it was just a matter of time. It's been hot and they were beginning to get spots on them that would rot before they got good and ripe. So these were the last of the lucky ones... Maybe a big salad with chunks of tomatoes in it for supper. Maybe hamburgers with a couple of big slices. Maybe I'll just stand over the sink and sprinkle a little salt on 'em and eat 'em and let the juice run down my arm and savor every last summer bite!
My freezer is full to overflowing, the top, the bottom, the door, AND my fridge freezer - not to mention all the canned goods from this year's harvest. The good Lord has really blessed us here on this little piece of land this year! Just look at the hay up there in the top picture! It's been lush and green and abundant, too!
New Topic --- I can't walk outside or open the back door unless THIS happens...
Of all the cluckin' and fussin' and pushin' and shovin' - you just wouldn't believe. I'd like to think they love me for me, but NOOOO. They only love me for what treats I bring! Or they wanna get out and roam and look for bugs. They fall all over themselves at the door to the pen. When I open it, they jump and try to see what I'm bringing. Lately (and you may have seen it in the freezer) I've been giving them watermelon - FROZEN watermelon in the hot afternoons. They love it - it's cold, it gives them something to do, and I'm hoping it helps keep them cool. They also love when I spray water into a corner and make some puddles. They get in that mud and pick around and I guess it cools them off, too.
Well, my dear ones - gotta run - one last thing... here's what's on my easel... just a sneak peak - I'll be posting over at my art blog, South Light, in a short. Have a great weekend!
Oh yeah - and keep yer dress down...

Do you plant again in September? Is there time for a second growing season? This would be so strange to pull up a garden in our corner at this time. So many differences from location to location. You sure did all right, though. Just look at that freezer!
Your hens look happy and healthy and wonderful. They've got the best B&B in town!
Love your header picture....It's ALL American...ALL East Texas!
yep, the temps are just about to take over....I have one tomato plant that still looks good...other than that, it's all gone...
have a beautiful Sat.

I finally found a little time to catch up with you -- My, you are doing so well! I absolutely love your little arrangement for your chickens! It looks so good! I also think you have found your talent (I especially like the chicken painting in your earlier post -- Are you keeping that one or selling it?). I hope you keep it up! And yes, we live in Texas, too, and our garden is just done as well. I will be pulling up my droopy, dried, sad looking plants this weekend. Our garden wasn't nearly as productive as yours, but at least it was better that previous years. Hope you have a wonderful week!
Lori
My chickens do the same thing! I like your chicken pen, it's very attractive. And, the harvest from your garden is wonderful! So glad you got a good one this year. Hope you do get some rain, though.
Your garden 'did-good-by' you and you 'did-good-by' your garden! Look at that stuffed freezeer!
You are a real chicken farmer now, aren't you my Dear? Knowing how to cool 'em down and keep 'em occupied. :-)))))
Gentle hugs,
"Auntie"
Oh and I agree with Vee, our neck of the woods is no where near, the end of the growing season. Another interesting thing, about all the diff parts of our Beloved Land. :-)
What a wonderful bounty your garden provided. Here in the Northeast our growing season is just hitting it's stride. I did notice the watermelon in the freezer, I did not know you could freeze watermelon, I've learned something new. Watermelon is a favorite of my girl's too. Here in Maine it is hot and humid, a severe thunderstorm is predicted. Enjoy the day, greetings from Maine, Julie.
Yep, that was a little scary..don't you leave me...someday I'm gonna show up at your doorstep! My chickens do the same thing...all run up to the gate waiting for their watermelon or bread treats. Gotta love 'em!!
Your freezer looks great! I was just out tending bees and checking our garden. It is still going. I adore your chicken coop!!!! I want one just like it!
Mine do the same thing. As soon as they just hear the door open they start up. I have to sneek out now and then to keep them quiet.
Vickie - you crack me up! You had me going - thought you were deciding to not blog JUST when things were getting really fun with all the activity that's kicking into high gear out there! I'm so excited about all of your accomplishments. You've worked hard to get where you are, so enjoy it! And I love the sneak peak of the canvas...looks amazing already!!

my garden pretty much sucks this year....it got put in later than it should have, then the weather wreaked havoc...no rain, no rain, no rain. i have gotten some zucchini, a few herbs, some pickling cukes and 1, count it, one...cherry tomato. I will have a few more tomatoes for sure, but nothing like whati was expecting out there.
there's always next year!
Oh what little I had has beat the dirt also...and here comes the heat this week...100plus all week
You have done a great job...I am laughing at the chickens waiting for their treat
Are you going to do a fall garden?
So glad your garden did so well; mine grew a great lot of weeds.
I've been freezing tomatoes out of my son's garden, but they are about done and so am I! No more picking in 107 degree heat! The okra just about ate my hands up until I wore gloves! Not many cucumbers this year and the squash bugs were terrible! My daughter has chickens, but my Dudley dog would be relentless to tear into a cage, so I'll just have to enjoy hers! The farm looks good--don't think about quitting--you had me scared for a minute! I'm going to hop on over and check out your new art project!

You are definitely no slouch Vickie!A Proverbs 31 woman for sure.Tending and harvesting your gardens, taking care of family...and creating art.Art for the senses, the mind, the soul.A woman to be praised, and I praise you! (and God who created you)
Beautiful preserves...
*BWAHAHAHA* Vickie, you have got those girls so SPOILED!! It's funny how they learn who brings the treats, though~ mine do the same thing.
I always think it's a little sad when the garden is on it's last legs, but at the same time I'm always so grateful for what the Lord has blessed us to grow from the ground.
Looks like you have some wonderful fresh veggies for the winter! *YUMMY*
I can't wait to see the painting! You are so good!!! Wish I had a painter's eye and hand for the brush. Gotta love those chickens, and they love their mama, for sure. Sure am jealous of your garden produce this year. We got zilch! No peas at all. I'm crying in my pea-less soup!
TTYL!
